3 How many secondary students are doing VET? Significant increases over the last nine years, although dropping off slightly since 2012 3

4 VET delivered to secondary students in Queensland  In 2014, Queensland accounted for 31.6% (71,584) of all ‘VET in Schools’ students and 55.6% (20,977) of all school-based apprentices and trainees across Australia.  Of these, there were 10,665 ‘VET in Schools’ students studying in the Catholic Sector, including 1,725 school-based apprentices and trainees. 4

5  Preparing Secondary Students for Work – a framework for vocational learning and VET delivered to secondary students provides a platform for schools, school systems, industry and the training sector to work collaboratively to deliver the best outcomes for school students.  The framework was developed by the Schools Vocational Learning and Training Working Group, which includes representation from state and territory governments, Catholic and Independent education sectors, industry and training. 8 Key elements for enhanced career education for students  Aims to assist schools implement strategies that help students develop the skills and knowledge required to make effective career related decisions. 8

9 Supporting employer engagement with schools  This factsheet aims to support industry and employers to understand the range of opportunities available for them to contribute to the learning and development of young people in the delivery of vocational learning and VET to secondary students. 9

10 VET self-assessment tool for schools - Overview  Assist schools to plan, implement and review existing VET programmes or develop new programmes.  The tool has been structured around a ‘life-cycle’ approach to VET consisting of Planning, Implementation and delivery, and Review stages.  Focus areas within each module includes: Course selection and structure Facilities and equipment Staffing Working with employers Integrating VET RTO arrangements Student support Communication 10
