2 Agenda Topics  Need for Clarity on Requirements & Outcomes (Education Trust Research)  Examples of States’ College, Career, Community-Ready Requirements  Definitions  Course & Credit Requirements  Endorsements/Qualifications for Access to Post-Secondary Careers & Colleges

3 Despite rhetoric around College- & Career- Readiness, just 8 % of HS graduates complete a full College- & Career-preparatory curriculum (course of study) Nearly ½ of graduates complete neither a College- nor Career-ready course sequence. (High schools prioritizing credit accrual, treating graduation rather than CCR as the goal) © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates. 4  How many of our young people are completing a full college- & career-prep curriculum?  How do those patterns differ by race & socioeconomic status as well as students’ own aspirations? © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates. 6 “U.S. Graduation Rate Hits New Record High” --- U.S. Department of Education, February 12, 2015 But… (Nationwide), thousands of students are testing into remedial reading, writing, or math courses. Employers report that high school graduates don’t have basic foundational skills to start in entry-level positions. © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates. 7 For both educators and policymakers, the aspiration is to prepare students for college and career, because … it is now clear that college and career are no longer two distinct pathways. Most students will need to earn a postsecondary credential in order to achieve a family-sustaining wage in today’s economy. © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates. 14 All high school students should  develop a foundation in the academic disciplines identified in the MassCore course of study,  build competencies for workplace readiness and  focus on applying academic strategies to problem solving in diverse professional and life contexts, appropriate to individual student goals

15 The recommended program of studies includes:  four years of English,  four years of Math,  three years of a lab-based Science,  three years of history,  two years of the same foreign language,  one year of an arts program and  five additional "core" courses such as business education, health, and/or technology..
