3 ○Potential energy is the energy associated with an object because of the position, shape, or condition of the object. ○There are two types of potential energy: gravitational and elastic. What Is Potential Energy? ϟ ϟ ϟ

4 GravitationalElastic ○The energy available for use when a deformed elastic object returns to its original configuration. ○PE elastic = 1/2Kx 2 K= Spring Constant Spring constant is a parameter that is a measure of a spring's resistance to being compressed or stretched X= Distance (Compressed or Streched SI Unit – Joules (J) ○Ex. Pulling back a bow and arrow, stretching out a rubber band. ○Gravitational PE is the potential energy stored in the gravitational fields of interacting bodies. ○PE g = mgh M= Mass (kg) G= 9.8 (m/s) H = Height (m) SI Unit – Joules (J) ○Ex. Boulder sitting on top of a hill, ball leaning on top a counter. Gravitational PE vs. Elastic PE PE total = Pe g + PE elastic

7 Examples of Potential Energy ○Example PE VideoExample PE Video Example Problem A cart is loaded with a brick and pulled at constant speed along an inclined plane to the height of a seat-top. If the mass of the loaded cart is 3.0kg and the height of the seat top is 0.45 meters, then what is the potential energy of the loaded cart at the height of the seat top? Givens m= 3.0 kg g= 9.8 m/s h= 0.45m -This is an example of gravitational potential energy. Equation Pe g = mgh Solve PE g = (3)(9.8)(.45) PE g = 13.2 Joules

8 Examples of Potential Energy Example Problem #2 If the force to stretch a spring is given as F = (100 N/m)x, then what is the potential energy of the spring if it is stretched 2 meters from rest? -This is an example of elastic potential energy. Givens k= 100 N/m x= 2m Equation PE elastic = 1/2Kx 2 Solve PE g = (1/2)(100)(2 2 ) PE g = 200 Joules
