Learning Targets are more than just Window Treatments Mellisa Smith Data & Accountability Students will be able to construct a model aquarium, observe it, and record their observations.

60 Second Free Write Take a minute (literally) to write a response to the following question: Why do we require teachers to post their learning targets?

Learning Targets

Learning Target Definition Non-examplesExamples Facts/Characteristics Clear description of what is to be learned; Provides a clear vision of the ‘destination’ for student learning Measureable & attainable Focus on intended learning Focus on “ chunks” of a standard Clear, specific language congruent to standard Adding Fractions Do Exercise 3.7 on pg 148 Learning Activities Tasks Assessments I can add fractions with unlike denominators. Students will be able to explain how the skeleton and muscles create a frame for the body.

A key part of the learning process is to develop in students an internal vision of what they are to be learning. Thus we start with a concept of the goal or learning target which originally is the teacher’s, but which ideally the students internalize.

Learning Targets before Instruction

Clear learning targets can help teachers make appropriate instructional and assessment decisions when coupled with a vision for what quality looks like. Success Criteria

Success Criteria - What is it? o The success criteria identifies what students need to do during the learning process to meet the learning target. o Focuses on what quality work looks like. o Used to help both teachers and students identify and address gaps that exist between student’s current performance and the desired learning outcomes. o Typically written as “I will…” or “This means…”

5 Research-based strategies that significantly improve student learning:  Sharing criteria (clear learning targets with success criteria)  Questioning  Feedback  Peer assessment  Self-assessment

CC STANDARD LEARNING TARGETS STUDENT FRIENDLY TARGETS for teachers Plan & Deliver Assessments Instruction for learnersself-assess I can … I am learning to… Success criteria (I will…)

LT during PLT Planning 4.NBT.1: Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 ÷ 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division. Learning Targets: “I Can”Criteria For Success: “I Will” 1) I can identify the location of a digit in a number. I will use strategies, such as creating and labeling a place value chart and label, to show my understanding of place value. 2) I can determine the value of a digit in a number. I will identify the value of the digit based on its location in the number. 3) I can explain the relationship between the location of a digit and its value. I will demonstrate how moving from one place value to the next changes the value by a multiple of ten. 4) I can demonstrate the value of a number using a variety of tools. I will show that a number can be represented in multiple ways using different tools. (ex: base ten blocks, money, popsicle sticks, etc.)

Students will be able to identify a US penny This means that students will recall the characteristics that are on the front and the back of a US penny Learning TargetSuccess Criteria The destinationStep by step directions of how to get there

Learning Activities Learning Targets Assessment This triangle represents the relationship between learning targets, assessments and learning activities. If these three components are congruent, …they achieve an exact match with the Standard, then teaching and learning is enhanced. “Magic Triangle” Standard

Teacher Benefits Select instructional activities that actually help students achieve the target. Know if the assessment adequately covers and samples what we taught. Correctly identify what students know and don’t know and their level of achievement. Plan next steps in instruction. Give detailed, descriptive feedback to students.

Student Benefits Students know and can articulate the intended learning and what success looks like. Students are better able to self-assess or set goals – both skills that helps them learn more. Students have a better understanding of what grades mean.

Parent Benefits Learning targets are already in parent friendly language. Learning targets can be sent home or posted on website. Parents know what their child is learning and how to help him/her improve. Parents have a better understanding of what grades mean.

What to look for in the classroom from the teacher….. Learning targets & success criteria that are aligned to each other, as well as to the curriculum Learning targets & success criteria that are written in student-friendly language Learning targets & success criteria that are shared with students (written/posted in class, given as a rubric, used as a note- taking guide)

What to look for in the classroom from the students….. References to learning targets & success criteria during class discussions and explanations Use of the success criteria to explain “where s/he is” in learning
