4 Answers to Common Questions Are the minimum specifications equivalent across manufacturers. –Yes. They are written to include all computer manufacturers and bidders are requested to submit pricing based on the minimum specifications for comparison purposes. When does the current Apple contract expire? –July 31, 2006. Can schools currently buy Apple Computers? –Yes? Can the Apple Contract be renewed? –Yes. Does the District plan to negotiate a renewal of the Apple Contract? –Yes. The District is currently negotiating a renewal.

5 Answers to Common Questions Are school based staff participating in the negotiations with Apple? –Yes. Three teachers from three schools that use Apple Computers are on the negotiating committee. What is the District demanding from Apple? –The best value for a system meeting the minimum technical specifications. Is the District planning to go single platform? –Answer: No. Do the contracts for Dell, IBM/Lenovo, and HP that will be going for Board action on May 9th affect the current Apple Contract? –No.

6 Answers to Common Questions Why was Apple not awarded among the contracts going for Board action on May 9th? –Based on the response to the minimum specifications that all vendors submitted pricing for, Apple was highest among all submittals ($580.28 more than the lowest bid). –The contracts that are being awarded are based on the following three lowest bids for desktop computers : $998.76 (IBM/Lenovo) $1017.98 (Dell) $1078.30 (HP) Apple’s bid was $1579.04. –Vendors were asked to submit pricing among equivalent technical and service specifications. –Apple Computer has objected to memory resident anti-theft tracking software (loaded in the chipset). All other vendors met this requirement.

7 Let’s Compare the Costs! LAUSD purchased 4701 Apple Desktops in 2005. If LAUSD purchased Apple Desktops with submitted bid pricing from Apple, cost would be $7,423,067.04 ($1579.04 per unit). If LAUSD purchased PC Desktops with submitted bid pricing from lowest PC bid price, cost would be $4,695,170.76 ($998.76 per unit). This is a $2,727,896.28 cost difference. If LAUSD purchased computers from the lowest PC bid price $7,423,067.04 would have purchased 7432 computers (using $998.76 per unit). This is an additional 2731 computers for students and teachers.

8 Let’s Compare the Costs! LAUSD purchased 7295 Apple Laptops in 2005. If LAUSD purchased Apple Laptops with submitted bid pricing from Apple, cost would be $9,479,925.45 ($1299.51 per unit). If LAUSD purchased PC Laptops with submitted bid pricing from lowest PC bid, cost would be: $7,988,025 ($1095.00 per unit). This is a $1,491,900.45 cost difference. If LAUSD purchased laptops from the lowest PC bid price $ 9,479,925.45 would have purchased 8657 computers (using $1095.00 per unit). This is an additional 1362 laptops for students and teachers.

9 Is it about price? Yes. When all of the specifications (technical and service) are met and compared equally, price is the determining factor. Purpose of competitive contracting is to get the best prices for the District. All vendors are allowed to compete on an equal playing field.

10 Is it about choice? Yes Currently there are only three manufacturer choices: –Apple –Gateway –IBM/Lenovo When the Board approves the contracts associated with C-565 and C-565ADD the following choices will be available: –Apple –Dell –Gateway –HP –IBM/Lenovo
