2 WHY? Conflict over Tariffs North—wanted high tariffs South—did NOT want high tariffs

3 Conflict over Tariffs North—wanted high tariffs to protect industries because they made their own products. South—imported most manufactured goods so did not want tariffs because they would have to pay more for products.

4 Conflict over Tariffs 1828: Northern manufacturers pressure Congress to pass high tariffs……AND THEY DID “Tariff of Abominations” - Nickname from the South Southern States believed in States’ Rights

5 Nullification Crisis States’ Rights—belief that state power should be greater than federal power Believed that states could “nullify” or cancel a law that THEY thought was unconstitutional. Led by Vice President John C. Calhoun from South Carolina John C. Calhoun

6 Nullification Crisis Daniel Webster from Massachusetts led the opposition to States’ Rights in the Senate. Believed that the U.S. was one nation and individual states cannot override its laws. Daniel Webster
