Understand the Coordinate Plane as Horizontal and Vertical Number Lines… 6.NS.C.6b

What happens if we combine a horizontal and vertical number line?

In this lesson you will learn about the coordinate plane by combining horizontal and vertical number lines.

In this lesson you have learned about the coordinate plane by combining horizontal and vertical number lines.

Guided Practice 1. In what quadrant would you plot the point (4, -5)? 2. In what quadrant would you plot the point (-3, -10)? IV III

Extension Activities Look at some maps of your local area, state, and country. See if you can find a type of grid (coordinate plane) on them. If you don’t have any paper maps, you can also do an internet search (images) on maps with grids. http://www.maps.com/map.aspx?pid=7298

Extension Activities Divide your classroom into 4 quadrants (or do this outside). Label each quadrant as I, II, III, and IV (like the coordinate plane). One person is “it”. They close their eyes and count to 10. Everyone else quietly picks a quadrant to stand in. Without opening their eyes, the “it” person calls out a quadrant. All of those people are out. Play continues until only 1 person is left.

Draw a map of your neighborhood. Overlay it with a grid (coordinate plane). Describe places by what section of the grid they are in.

Quick Quiz 1. In what quadrant would you plot the point (-7, 2)? 2. In what quadrant would you plot the point (8, 10)?
