5 O PEN Let’s bring our minds back to history and where we left off. What was the American Revolution? Which side won? Which country aided in that victory? What did they win? What did the winners have to create after the Revolution?

7 T HE U NIVERSITY OF G EORGIA U.S. Constitution signer, Abraham Baldwin, wrote UGA charter (plan) Georgia’s General Assembly approved UGA charter in 1785 Federal government donated land on which to build First public university to be established in America Baldwin was president of UGA between 1785-1801 (existed only on paper during this time) 1801> opened for classes 1806> first permanent building, “Franklin College”

8 T HE UNIVERSITY OF G EORGIA Began with financial problems; over the next 130 years important political and business leaders graduated from UGA After the Civil War, its size and reputation greatly expanded Although UGA existed first (on paper), University of North Carolina held classes first Today the 2 schools have a rivalry over who was the first true university in America

14 S.A.L.M.AS.A.L.M.AS.A.L.M.AS.A.L.M.A Louisville was Georgia’s 3 rd state capital (1796-1807) after Savannah and Augusta Louisville was named after King Louis XVI (16th) in honor of France’s support during the American Revolution As Georgians expanded their land west, the state capital followed them to be in a central location to the people Capital failed due to malaria outbreaks and Ogeechee River being difficult to navigate for trade Louisville Market House sold produce, machinery, and slaves (SALMA) = S avannah, A ugusta, L ouisville, M illedgeville, A tlanta Georgia’s 5 Capitals

18 S PREAD OF M ETHODIST AND B APTIST CHURCHES John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church, arrived with Oglethorpe Second Great Awakening (1790-1830) saw large numbers of Georgians identify themselves as Baptist and Methodist Mission work by these churches converted slaves on plantations Farmers and townspeople held revivals and camp meetings to increase members After a harvest, revivals allowed people to hear sermons and socialize Circuit riders were ministers who rode from town to town preaching and converting people to Baptist and Methodist faiths The nickname “Bible Belt” came from this time period

22 6. What did men study in universities? Women? ~ Men: Greek, mathematics, and grammar ~ Women: arts and music 7. Why did most females not attend a university? ~ Could not be employed so had no need of an education. Stayed home to tend the household. 8. Why did Georgia's state capital rotate between two cities? ~ state tried to have a capital close to everyone 9. Why did Louisville stop being Georgia’s capital? ~ malaria outbreaks and Ogeechee River was not easily navigable 10. Why did Milledgeville have to be evacuated? ~ Union troops marched through during Civil War 11. Why was Atlanta selected as Georgia’s final capital? ~ had lots of railroads
