3 How do we create sustainability in our cities? (T.J.Foxon et al, 2002). 1.Living within environmental means 2. Ensuring a strong, healthy and just society 3. Achieving a sustainable economy

4 Living within environmental means We must improve our environment, whilst ensuring that our natural resources remain unharmed, thus ensuring its use for future generations. Improvements to our urban environment must be done through green buildings, climate control, and eco-friendly transportation (public transportation and bike trails).

5 Ensuring a strong, healthy and just society Individual or human capacity - the attributes and resources that individuals can contribute to their own well-being, and to the well-being of the community as a whole. Such resources include education, skills, health, values and leadership. Social or community capacity – the relationships, networks and norms that facilitate collective action taken to improve quality of life and ensure that such improvements are sustainable. To be effective and sustainable, these individual and community resources need to be developed and used within the context of four guiding principles: equity, security, social inclusion and interaction, and adaptability.

6 Achieving a sustainable economy Building a strong, stable and sustainable economy which provides prosperity and opportunities for all. In which environmental and social costs fall on those who impose them – the polluters pay. There is a need to make more and better use of appropriate technology, materials and designs. Technologies could contribute to production processes that minimize negative impacts on the natural environment. New, environment-friendly products exist in many industries to replace products that pollute and/or consume excessive energy or natural resources to produce. When people and businesses who practice sustainability are given insensitive.
