4 What is pinyin? Pinyin was adopted in the people’s Republic of China in 1958. Pinyin uses alphabetic to assist the pronunciation of Mandarin. Pinyin has initials, finals and tone marks. e.g. pīng 20/01/20123Qiaochao Zhang q.zhang9@aston.ac.uk

7 Tone marks 20/01/2012Qiaochao Zhang q.zhang9@aston.ac.uk6 Four tone marks: a a a a Note: A tone mark needs to be on top of a vowel letter. When a final has two or more vowels, the tone mark should be placed above the vowel following the sequence a>o>e>i>u> ü, e.g. hăo. However, for ‘iu’ and ‘ui’, tone marks have to be over the last vowel, e.g. huì and xiū.
