1 Out into the Desert

2 Out into the Desert God Goes Before (13:17-18).
17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”

3 Exodus 13:18 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.

4 Matthew 6:13 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

5 Out into the Desert God Connects Us with the Past (13:19).
19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.” (13:19)

6 Out into the Desert The bones of Joseph speak of two things:

7 Out into the Desert The bones of Joseph speak of two things:
Isolation and individualism

8 Out into the Desert The bones of Joseph speak of two things:
Isolation and individualism Ancestor worship.

9 Hebrews 11:22 22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.

10 Out into the Desert God Walked before them (13:20-22).
20 After leaving Sukkoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. (13:20)

11 Exodus 13:21 21 By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.

12 Exodus 13:22 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

13 Nehemiah 9:19 19 “Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take.

14 John 16:13 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

15 Acts 2:2 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

16 Acts 2:3 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

17 Acts 2:4 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

18 Out into the Desert God Takes Us to the Edge (14:1-4).
1 Then the LORD said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon. (14:1-2)

19 Exodus 14:3 3 Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’

20 Exodus 14:4 4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.” So the Israelites did this.

21 Mark 15:39 39 When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, ‘Truly this man was the Son of God!’ ”

22 Psalms 121:5 5 The LORD watches over you— the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

23 Psalms 121:6 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

24 Psalms 121:7 7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life;

25 Psalms 121:8 8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
