Who takes part in pageants? Nearly 3 million children take part in pageants. Many are girls from the ages of 6 months to 16-years-old. Their goal is to one day become Miss America.

What are contestants judged on? They are judged in … swimsuit talent evening wear costumes based on the pageant theme

CAUSES

What makes children do beauty pageants? Parents often force their children into pageants, convinced that it helps their confidence. Parents are hopeful to make them become something more. Some actually enjoy the process and experiences.

Example: Eden Wood Most famous beauty pageant toddler Her mother helps her to create an “Eden Empire” Enjoys it for fame and fun Wants to become Miley Cyrus

EFFECTS

External Problems More focused on their looks and appearance Superficial and fake aspects of beauty are emphasized Education is not a very high standard for many.

Internal Problems They measure their “self-worth” by their looks. Eating disorders and body image problems often occur. Shifts in self esteem Emotional scars are left.

Poor Image For parents… It makes them look bad. More for them rather than their kids. Aren’t able to control them. For kids… They become very self- centered. Sexualizes them. Costumes are many times inappropriate.

Financial Situations Beauty pageants are very expensive. The average cost of a dress is $1,000 (some pay up to $5,000). Entry fees are up to $200 for each pageant. Travel expenses and several outfits are needed, so there’s added cost. $

SOLUTION

Solutions for these problems could be… making sure outfits are appropriate parents explain to their kids the difference between reality and fantasy change the judging to focus more on talent, knowledge and heart

CONCLUSION

Children who participate in beauty pageants should be restricted in… how they appear and act on stage and off. rather than judging them more on looks, base it on talent and personality. what is appropriate compared to what’s not (parents should be aware).
