1 National Guidance By Dr Keith Faulkner, Liz Henley & Caroline Burnley Implementation of HPV Triage and Test of Cure Workshop Friday 17 th June 2011

2 The Pause…. The NHS Cancer Screening Programmes announced: “In view of the current NHS listening exercise, publication of the Cervical Screening Programme’s HPV triage and test of cure implementation guidance has been temporarily paused. It will be placed in the public domain once the exercise is complete.”

3 What do we know? There will be two guidance documents to support the implementation of HPV Triage and Test of Cure The Department of Health Guidance Advice to the NHS clarifying strategic planning The Cancer Screening Guidance Operational advice to professionals for implementation Both documents are expected to be in the public domain in the imminent future….

Introduction and background Human Papilloma Virus HPV triage and test of cure HPV pilots and the Sentinel Sites Implementation Project Improvements to the Programme and Cost Savings Funding of HPV triage and test of cure Rollout Guidance on how to manage roll-out The bidding criteria The bidding process The role of the pathway manager

Samples HPV testing centres High Risk HPV tests The current options for the HPV tests Quality assurance of HPV testing Training Training requirements for HPV Testing for triage and test of cure Primary care Cervical laboratory staff Laboratory staff Colposcopy staff

6 What will be in the Cancer Screening Guidance? Protocols Laboratory protocols Management of women Sample standard operating procedures for the packaging and transport of HPV vials and tubes Laboratory IT System Changes HPV action and result codes Information Materials Primary care information pack Standard invitation and result letters Information for women Revised information leaflets, result codes and letter templates

7 What has previously been announced/implied? There will be bidding criteria: > 35,000 Samples Colposcopy Capacity will be sufficient 14 Day will be maintained HPV Testing can be done to quality and participate in EQA A Pathway Manager within the Programme with the mandate to ensure the Service (point of contact) QA and PCT Sign off NHSCSP will offer support to 2 years; Year One - £2 per sample and Year Two - £1 per sample (GP and Community, Hospital Sources, GUM Services but not included are women under 25 (will be a buffer on the age) and non NHS)

8 Where next? As soon as the guidance is released we will circulate it widely and place it on the QARC website We will hold a meeting on the 30 th September 2011 to allow the companies to present their technology to allow commissioners and laboratories to make an informed choice as to the equipment they will use Continue to hold HPV Implementation Steering Groups Encourage the development of SHA Implementation working groups Support areas with developing their bids through the SHA Implementation working groups
