3 SELF-ADHESIVE TATTOO TRACKS BODY FUNCTIONS Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have created an "epidermal electronic system" (EES), which is a temporary tattoo capable of measuring a variety of medical values. It is as thin as a second layer of skin and monitors heart rates, brain waves and muscle activity. The minimal amount of power required is drawn by electronic components from stray electromagnetic radiation or miniature solar collectors. The tattoo is self-adhesive and can, if required, be placed on other temporary tattoos. 4 CARDIGAN SENDS EMERGENCY CALL The Design Research Lab from Berlin has created a cardigan that can make an emergency call. Sensors have been fitted inside the cardigan that connect via Bluetooth to a smartphone, which makes the emergency call to a selected contact number. Integrated LEDs light up to let the wearer know that the alarm has been triggered. This communicative cardigan has been designed for senior citizens so that they can just pull the sleeves or touch their upper chest to activate the call for help. 5 BRA DETECTS BREAST CANCER The US health company First Warning Systems has produced a bra called the "Breast Screening Bra" that can detect breast cancer. The bra looks like a normal sports bra but is equipped with many sensors that detect variations in temperatures indicating tissue abnormality in the breast. The collected data is uploaded to the internet where it is analysed by intelligent algorithms and presented to the user on her laptop or smartphone in graphical form. 6 GPS JACKET FOR THE BLIND "Point Locus" is the prototype of a GPS jacket developed by Canadian researchers from Simon Fraser University. It is intended to help the visually impaired find their way around unfamiliar surroundings. The jacket is equipped with a voice recognition system, a GPS sensor and vibrating motors. The destination is given by voice command, while the motors on the shoulder pads provide tactile instructions. If the wearer is supposed to turn, for example, only one side will vibrate; if the direction taken is correct, both sides will vibrate at the same time and at regular intervals. 7 ADDED HUBS MAKE WHEELCHAIRS ELECTRIC The Japanese company WHILL recently developed a wheelchair of the same name that makes it possible to convert ordinary wheelchairs into electric ones. This will be a great help to those who could not normally afford to buy their own electric wheelchair. Powered by lithium ion batteries, the circular hubs attached to the wheels each contain a 24- volt electric motor that brings electric drive to manual wheelchairs, with speeds of up to 30 km per hour. For users, steering the chair is just a matter of leaning in the direction they want to go. 8 LASER-POWERED EYE IMPLANT LETS THE BLIND SEE The Israeli company Nano Retina has developed an eye implant that helps blind people to see with a resolution of 576 pixels. The implant consists of a sensor that is directly attached to the retina. The sensor is powered by a photovoltaic cell that is illuminated by an infrared laser through corrective, optical glasses. This produces power of up to three milliwatts, which enables vision in levels of grey. In future, there will be a higher resolution of the implant to allow the visually impaired to read. 9 GAME PROMOTES FEEL-GOOD FACTOR A digital tree as a symbol for mental and physical well-being is the focus of the digital life-enhancing platform "Mindbloom Life Game", in which users can try to reach their personal goals in a playful setting. People have to first define their targets and activities for self- improvement, such as listening to music or uploading photos of friends and family. By doing so, they receive the amount of sunshine required to help their trees grow. For the necessary rain, users must fulfil physical or social activities like scheduling a date, spending time with family or doing push-ups. 10 PRIVATE ONLINE NURSES The service "Neighborhood Nurse" offers users direct contact to nurses and carers, so that people can avoid an unnecessary trip to the doctor by making a phone call or sending an e-mail. The service is available 24/7, ensuring that worried parents, for instance, can always turn to competent staff with their questions. People can explain the symptoms online and, in return, get prepared self-help instructions from doctors. The offers also include care for the elderly, advice on insurance matters and individual services for particular needs. 11 THE CAR AS HEALTH MONITOR In the same way that modern sensor technology monitors the state of cars, it will now also be used to inform drivers of their health conditions. After the car brand MINI already developed a new vehicle in 2010 with the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California, which integrates driver behaviour into the driving experience, BMW is now set to cooperate with the Center for Body Computing. Part of the project will involve developing sensors and computer programs, and integrating them into cars to record health data and inform drivers of risks, such as high blood pressure. 12 THE SENSOR NETWORK FOR THE ELDERLY The American company GrandCare Systems has developed a system of the same name that allows people to monitor elderly friends or relatives at home. The system records, among other things, the opening and closing of doors, going to bed and when no movement is detected. This information is sent via e-mail, text message or voice- mail to loved ones. In this way, children living far away can remain up- to-date on how elderly relatives are fairing and if they're taking their medicine regularly. 13 SLEEP MANAGER ON THE SMARTPHONE The American company Zeo recently launched a "Zeo Sleep Manager" called "Zeo Mobile" as a mobile application for iOS and Android systems. The app comes with a headband that uses sensors to measure brain waves during sleep. The software analyses the collected data and draws up graphs based on the various stages of sleep. Having an account with "MyZeo.com" enables users to compare their data to millions of other people, find out how far diet and sports activities can influence their sleep and get some advice from leading experts on the subject. 14 HEADBAND IMPROVES THE WAY WE THINK The Canadian company InteraXon, a thought-controlled computing specialist, has presented new technology called "Muse" which is a headband that enables users to control their thoughts via their smartphones. The minimalist device is fitted with a range of sensors that can analyse brain waves in real time. The longer "Muse" is used, the more precisely it works. Besides controlling games and other apps on the smartphone, the device also enhances concentration, reduces stress and strengthens the memory. 15 SENSOR ANALYSES PERSONAL CALORIE CONSUMPTION A multi-sensor developed at the University of Pittsburgh is capable of tracking all a person's activities, including food intake, shopping patterns, and activity levels in order to analyse whether the user's lifestyle is healthy. This "eButton" uses a camera, an accelerometer and GPS and connects wirelessly to a computer for analysing the data. The system is intended to help fight obesity in developed nations, which can pose serious problems to the economy. 16 PHOTOS AND CROWDSOURCING ANALYSE FOOD VALUE Researchers at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a highly practical assistant in the fight against unhealthy eating. With an app called "PlateMate", users can take a photo of their meal and have its nutritional value estimated via crowdsourcing. The tool then automatically works out the number of calories on the plate. After some initial problems involving misidentifying foods from other cultures, the software is now just as accurate in providing calorie estimates as a group of trained nutritionists. 17 HEALTHY EATING WITH ELECTRONIC FORK "HAPIfork" is an electronic fork that collects data on the eating habits of users and sends them via Bluetooth to an online dashboard. If users eat too quickly, "HAPIfork" vibrates to tell them to slow down. The times between taking bites and the overall times for eating a meal are recorded on the online platform. In this way, people are playfully motivated to reconsider and improve the way they eat. What's more, a mobile app visualises the progress made in eating more slowly and enables people to record their HAPImoments in videos and images.
