GREENHOUSE EFFECT LAB Procedures

 Assign roles to your group members:  Temperature monitors (2 students)  Timekeeper  Recorder

 Prepare both containers.  Tape thermometer to beaker.  Have the actual thermometer pressing against the glass.  Leave space between the thermometer and the bottom of the glass.

 Container 1:  Label Control  You will eventually put water and baking soda in this one.  Container 2:  Label CO2  You will eventually put vinegar and baking soda in this one.

When measuring out 35g of baking soda, you need to put the small beaker on the scale first. Then zero or tare it until it says 0. Then add the baking soda. Reminders

When you add the two liquids into the containers, put the plastic wrap and rubber band over it immediately. Then swirl the containers. Don’t turn the light on yet. Reminders

Measure Temperature before you turn on the light, immediately after you turn it on, then every 2 minutes after. Someone needs to keep time. READ THE DIRECTIONS. Procedure

THIS SHOULD BE FILLED OUT BY THE END. Container Type BEFORE (Record before light is turned on) 0 min. (Turn Light On) 2 min.4 min. 6 min. (Measure greatest heat increase) 8 min. (Turn off light after recording this measureme nt) 10 min. Heat Increase (8 min. – Before) Heat Reductio n (8 min. - 10 minute) Control CO 2 Container with Greatest Heat Increase at 6 min:

When you are done measuring the temperature and calculating the heat increase/retention, clean out your containers and dry them with a paper towel. Save the plastic wrap (unless it rips) and the rubber bands. Then start the analysis questions #1-8. Procedure

ANALYSIS QUESTIONS  1. Which container type (control or CO 2 ) had a greater heat increase?  2. Why do you think this occurred? Think about how blankets work. CO2 traps more heat than water because it’s a Greenhouse Gas. CO2 should have.

 3. What did you notice about the rate of heat loss after the lights were turned off?  4. How did the heat gained over the first 8 minutes compare to the amount of heat reduction during the last 2 minutes? CO2 lost less heat than water in 2 mins. This means the atmosphere will take longer to lose the heat gained by fossil fuel b/c of the GHG. Gases heat up quickly but take longer to cool down.

 5. Which container shows a larger greenhouse effect? Why? CO2 container because it is a greenhouse gas and traps more heat than just air.
