Thermometer ●A thermometer is used to measure temperature ●Each thermometer contains a sensor, a material that is affected by Changes, such as temperature. ●We need different types of thermometers for different things Isabel bereziuk 7-5

Thermocouple Used to measure very high temperatures wires of two different metals are twisted together; when the wire tips are heated, a small electrical current is generated. This current can even turn on/off a switch!
3
Bimetallic strip The metals are joined together. As one expands/heats it coils one way; as it contracts/cools it coils the other way. When the bimetallic strip cools, it moves the mercury filled capsule one way, turning the furnace on/off. A bimetallic strip is used in the oven, furnace, kettle, iron, fridge, ect. In a thermostat, the bimetallic strip is fastened to a glass capsule containing a drop of liquid mercury metal. When the bimetallic strip cools, the capsule tilts. The mercury rolls to one end, fills the gap between two wires, and completes an electrical circuit.
4
Recording Thermometer Uses a bimetallic strip to detect changes in temperature. The end of the coil is attached to a lever and a pen; records temperature on a slowly turning paper. The paper only makes a full rotation once a week.
5
Infrared Thermogram The color or brightness of the infrared image made from special film shows the temperature of an object. The warm colors mean it’s hot. Cool colors mean it’s cold. They use this in the military, airports, detecting heat loss, ect.
