MacArthur Foundation Study of Successful Aging Long-term, multidisciplinary research on factors that determine how well we age. John Wallis Rowe M.D. and Robert L. Kahn, PhD Published February 1998 Study outcomes effectively destroyed some common negative myths about aging (e.g., that illness accompanies aging or that mental capacity diminishes with age).

Healthy/Successful Aging Those following a schedule of regular physical activity were half as likely to show physical decline as those who were inactive. Participation in social activities or groups seemed to produce the same protective benefits as those who exercised Those who participated in work or volunteer activities were less likely to show physical decline as they aged Participants who had chronic conditions when they began the study experienced the protective effects of exercise and socialization. Physical activity provided protection against cognitive decline.

Successful Aging MacArthur Foundation Study of Successful Aging Defined successful aging as having three components: low risk of disease and disability; high mental and physical function; and active engagement with life. Emphasized that lifestyle choices are more important than heredity. Society's role in promoting successful aging.

The Shepherd’s Center model addresses Life satisfaction, health promotion and wellness as meaning and purpose Offers an open-ended view of the later years as a positive, exciting and meaningful period of one’s life. The focus is to add life to years, not necessarily years to life.

Congregational Nurse and Health Ministry Program Supports a network of congregations throughout Forsyth County that focus on the health needs of their own members as well as individuals in their surrounding neighborhoods. Engages retired and semi-retired nurses and other health professionals as volunteers in the program Facilitates local faith community nurse training, nurse certification and continuing education for nurses and other health educator volunteers. Serves as a broad coalition of partners, including congregations, medical centers, universities, colleges, and social service agencies, that address the growing health disparities in our community.

Successful Aging Get Social Studies have shown that very social people have sharper thinking and a much lower risk of memory problems as they age. Or volunteer. It's linked with a lower risk of heart disease and a longer life. Studies show that the earlier you begin volunteering, the lower your risk of health problems later.

Successful Aging 92-year-old runner Harriette Thompson became the oldest woman to complete a full 26.2-mile marathon Sunday in San Diego, finishing the Rock n Roll Marathon with a time of 7:24:36.

Successful Aging Doc Severinsen will open the Winston-Salem Symphony’s Plugged-In Pops series on Oct. 29 with a big-band show at Reynolds Auditorium. Severinsen, 88, is best known for his work as the bandleader on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson from 1967 to 1992..
