3 The word Mesopotamia is actually a Greek word meaning “between the rivers” the rivers being Euphrates and Tigris River, the Tigris, and Euphrates River is located in modern Iraq, and much of Syria. Northern Mesopotamia is made up of mostly hills and plains due to seasonal rains the land is quite fertile. Early settlers farmed the land and used timber metals and stone from the nearby mountains.Southern Mesopotamia is made up of mostly marshy areas and wide, flat barren plains. lot of cities developed on the rivers but some early settlers had to irrigate land along the banks rivers in order for crops to grow.

4 Five thousand years a ago Mesopotamia needed a way to communicate about crops and taxes. The earliest form of writing was based on pictograms the pictograms started to begin to form in to script,called cuneiform over thousands of years the Mesopotamian scribes started to record daily events and trade and astronomy and literature on the clay tablets cuneiform was used in the near east which created several different language.

5 The pedestrians of Mesopotamia believed that the world was controlled by gods and goddess demons and monsters the gods and goddess are in charge of ex: trees rivers every city has its own god or goddess in charge of everything, large temples were built for the gods to live in other words “ziggurats” the priests look over the gods and goddess by doing rituals there were smaller temples where the pedestrians can make offerings demons were created by the gods or goddess with human heads and bodies monsters were made by animals and birds.

6 Sumerians were very good craftsmen they made ex :jewelry,gold,lapis,fancy chairs,andunglazed vases that kept water cool they weren’t good at huge stone sculptures because they did not have stone to work with they also made wonderful mosaics, helmets,and harps some of their music was ex:harp,reed pipes,drums,and the lyre.

7 The Mesopotamian’s were all in certain levels because of their belief. Ranked highest are the kings and nobility’s. the nobles were basically kings. The kings job was to rule and make sure everyone obeys the laws. the next level down is priest the priest job was to make sure that everyone behaved in a certain way that would make the priest happy. They were also the doctors of their time. the next level down is soldiers their job was to protect the city-state the next is scribes their job was to record daily events,trade,astronomy,and literature the lowest level is craftsmen farmers and slaves the craftsmen’s job was to make art like vases for water and ect.the farming was actually the most common job,but the job of the farmers was to grow crops for the city- state and the slaves job was to work for the king. the woman’s job is to do household tasks, taking care of the children, and making medicine that prevents pregnancy and abortion.

8 Soon after puberty a young girl is considered ready for marriage the marriages were arranged by their families future bride and groom the wedding have been described that the future husband pored perfume on the head of the future bride he also gave her family money and presents. Once the bride and groom are engaged the future bride is part of the fiancé’s family. if the future husband dies before the wedding the future bride had to marry one of his to one of his brothers or male relative.
