3 General Information 3 Please read ALL of the information in this syllabus carefully as it will give you the information you will need in order to succeed in this course. This is a fast-paced introduction to many elements of the computer world. If you are taking this course during the summer, it is even faster paced (hang on!) If this is your first online class, please read this document to determine whether you and your computer are prepared to take an online course: http://online.santarosa.edu/catedocs/reqs.html http://online.santarosa.edu/catedocs/reqs.html If you are new to Santa Rosa Junior College, be sure to read the New Student FAQs at http://www.santarosa.edu/stepshttp://www.santarosa.edu/steps Table of Contents General Information Your Instructor Description Outcomes & Objectives

4 Your Instructor My name is Donald Laird. I know, I'm not who you were expecting. When you signed up for this course, Lisa Beach was the instructor. Since then, Lisa has received a job offer that left her unable to teach this course, so I stepped in. I am happy for Lisa because I know that she wanted this job, but her leaving is a big loss for the CS department because she is such a good instructor. I am currently the CS department chair person. When I am not doing chair person duties, I teach Adobe Photoshop and Social Media Classes. I live in Cotati with my wife, two children, and three very spoiled cats. In my spare time I enjoy geocaching, traveling, and bad puns! 4 Table of Contents General Information Your Instructor Description Outcomes & Objectives

5 Description This 3-unit course is a broad introduction to computers: how they work, how they are used, how they communicate, and how they affect society. It provides students with a basic understanding of computer technology and concepts. The myITlab work for the course gives hands-on experience with word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and presentation software in a simulated Microsoft Office environment. Because your Microsoft Office training and testing will be done in a virtual environment on the publisher's website, you will not need to have Microsoft Office installed on your computer for this course. Whether you have a great deal of computer experience or only know the basics, you can probably expect to spend about 8-10 hours per week (double that in the summer) completing the work for this course. Because this is an online course, some of those hours represent the time you would normally spend in a classroom. Some weeks will, of course, be more intense than others. Your own experience with certain subjects may determine, in part, how difficult and time-consuming the work will be. You can find more information about suggested study times here.here 5 Table of Contents General Information Your Instructor Description Outcomes & Objectives
