3 What is Zeus?  It is a Trojan horse  Seems to perform desirable functions  Once downloaded it can steal information or do harm to your computer  Ex: fake antivirus software  Steals banking information  By Keystroke Logging  Tracking the keys struck on the keyboard  By Form Grabbing  Collects web form data before it reaches the internet

(continued)  How its spread  Drive-by downloads  Downloads authorized with out knowing  Download that happens with out any knowledge of it  Could happen when visiting websites, viewing email, or clicking a pop up window  Phishing  Attempts to acquire:  Usernames  Passwords  Credit card details  They do this by directing you fake websites that look identical to the real one

5 What Zeus Did  October 28, 2009  1.5 million phishing messages were sent to Facebook  Did this in order to spread the virus  November 3, 2009  British couple was arrested for stealing personal data with Zeus  November 14-15, 2009  Nine million phishing emails were sent saying they were from Verizon wireless  October 1, 2010  Cyber crime network used Zeus to hack U.S Computers  Stole around $70 million  90 people were arrested from US, UK, and Ukraine

6 FBI Investigation  October 2010  Hackers where in Eastern Europe  The virus was sent by email  When they opened it, it automatically installed itself  Captured passwords, account numbers, and other data to get access to the online bank account  Used this info take over their bank accounts and make transfers of thousands of dollars  Routed to accounts controlled by “money mules”  Were recruited from overseas  Created bank accounts using fake documents and fake names  Once the money was in the accounts they could wire the money back to there bosses, or turn it into cash and smuggle it out of the country.  Got paid commission  More than 100 people were arrested  Conspiracy to commit bank fraud and money laundering  90 were arrested in the U.S the other arrested in the UK and Ukraine  $70 million dollars were stolen

7 ZeuS Trojan Virus  Targets Blackberry  Hidden  Does not show up as an app  Sends a conformation message to the administrator  Lets them know that it can start receiving commands  Commands  It can reboot the phone  Add/remove/set sender  Block/unblock/phone numbers  Can block calls and even remove already blocked calls  Drop/delete SMS from hacker (not visible to the users).  Forward SMS to hacker  What the virus has access to  Bank accounts (if you use online banking)  PayPal account  Credit cards can get compromised

8 Removal and Detection  Very difficult to detect  3.6 million comps are infected  Security  Experts advising businesses continue to offer training on how to prevent clicking on bad sites or emails  Symantec  Its browser protection can prevent some infection attempts

9 Conclusion  Things to remember  Zeus is a Trojan horse virus  Seems harmless but it isn't  Zeus stole 70 million dollars  Look for safe websites and email  Don’t click on anything you don’t know, it could be a trap for the virus  There a browser protections available to buy  Doesn't work all the time
