3. Mexican American War  After the annexation of Texas, relations between Mexico and the United States were strained.  The two countries also disagreed on the Texas-Mexico border.  Slavery, Religion (Catholicism)  The United States insisted the Rio Grande formed the border.

4. Mexican American War. cont  President James K. Polk was determined to annex California and New Mexico.  After Mexico refused to sell the territories, Polk plotted to provoke Mexico into a war.  Which he did.
