Advanced Placement Studio (APS) Course Description The AP Studio Art Portfolio course is for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art and wish to develop mastery in the concept, composition, and execution of their ideas. Through this course, students will construct a portfolio of work, which focuses on a variety of concepts, techniques and approaches designed to help them demonstrate their abilities as well as their versatility with techniques, problem solving, and ideation. Students also develop a body of work for the Concentration section of the portfolio that investigates an idea of personal interest to them.

Advanced Placement Studio (APS) Pre-requisites Candidates must have at least 3 semesters of art classes – 2 WITH teacher approval and recommendation. Candidates must have a “B” average minimum in Art. Teacher approval – judged according to work ethic, responsibility, technical ability, and creativity.

Light and shade, line quality, rendering of form, composition, surface manipulation, and illusion of depth are drawing issues that can be addressed through a variety of means, which could include painting, printmaking, mixed media, etc. Abstract and observational works may demonstrate drawing competence. The range of marks used to make drawings, the arrangement of those marks, and the materials used to make the marks are endless. – Any work submitted in the Drawing Portfolio that incorporates digital or photographic processes must address issues such as those listed above, as well as mark making. Using computer programs merely to manipulate photographs through filters, adjustments, or special effects is not appropriate for the Drawing Portfolio.
