4 TASK Write a one-bar cell  In 4/4 (or 12/8 if you feel clever)  You may find it helpful to write the rhythm first  Aim for mostly quaver movement and include at least two quaver rests Tip: it will sound better if you just use the notes C, D, E, G, A (a pentatonic scale)

5 TASK Create a new instrument in Sibelius and rhythmically displace the cell by a quaver Experiment with different displacements, then try 4 layers

6 EXAMPLE Explain how this is an example of Layering Rhythmic displacement

7 NOTE ADDITION Describe what is happening You will need a lot of repeats to do this!

8 NOTE SUBTRACTION What do you think this means? Can you give an example?

9 TASK 2 Create a section of music based on your one-bar cell using:  Layering  Rhythmic Displacement  At least one part entering using note addition You must:  Have 4 instruments (can be the same)  Write at least 20 seconds of music You should:  Vary the texture by using different instruments You could:  Use note subtraction  Write a bass part to go underneath  Write a tune to go on top  Introduce your tune using note addition
