LEARNING OBJECTIVES To start a minimalist composition which uses: Rhythmic displacement Layering Note addition

TASK Write a one-bar cell In 4/4 (or 12/8 if you feel clever) You may find it helpful to write the rhythm first Aim for mostly quaver movement and include at least two quaver rests Tip: it will sound better if you just use the notes C, D, E, G, A (a pentatonic scale)

TASK Create a new instrument in Sibelius and rhythmically displace the cell by a quaver Experiment with different displacements, then try 4 layers

EXAMPLE Explain how this is an example of Layering Rhythmic displacement

TASK 2 Create a section of music based on your one-bar cell using: Layering Rhythmic Displacement At least one part entering using note addition You must: Have 4 instruments (can be the same) Write at least 20 seconds of music You should: Vary the texture by using different instruments You could: Use note subtraction Write a bass part to go underneath Write a tune to go on top Introduce your tune using note addition
