Magnet and ferrites tests Luciano Elementi Mu2e Extinction Technical Design Review 2 November 2015

Outline 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests2 Preliminary tests (ferrites and temperatures) Tests performed on the half meter model Results Plans Conclusions

Preliminary tests and ferrite choice 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests3 Both Mn-Zn and Ni-Zn Ferrite materials work to achieve the required magnetic field. However Ni-Zn Ferrites has been selected because it is a better insulator therefore it allows direct cooling through the copper tubing (i.e. the hottest part of the ferrite) * The copper tubing is in direct contact with the ferrites and at high voltage at the same time * Power losses are mostly from hysteresis and we concentrated (and tested) two ferrites on the model: CMD 10 and CMD 5005 both from Ceramic Magnetics

First Model (RTD Placement) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests4

Preliminary temperature test (First Model) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests5

Testing 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests6 1.H-Bridge, Switch mode Power Supply (300 kHz) 2.DC Power Supply and Impedance Matching transformer 3.RF Amplifier (5.1 MHz) and Impedance Matching Transformer 4.RTD (14 ea) 5.B-dot Loop (Direct Measure of the B Field)

First Model (RTD Placement) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests7

Preliminary temperature test (First Model) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests8

First Model: RTD 1 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests9

First Model: RTD 10 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests10

CMD 10 Estimated asymptotic terminal temperature (distribution) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests11 High temperatures indicates a problem with the ferrite contact to the copper tube. This was fixed, the test repeated and the resulting temperature readout limited to close to 100° C 200° C 160° C 120° C

Temperature Distribution: Non Resettable Stickers Results (CMD 10) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests12 Acceptable Temperature of range Max ~ 130° C (min

5.1 MHz 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests13 High harmonic constitutes no problem from a temperature stand point since the power used is considerably less Temperature data are indicative ° C

More testing: 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests14 1.CMD 10 Power Measurements 2.CMD 5005 Power Measurements 3.Temperature measurement RTD Not Resettable Temperature Sensors 4.Magnetic Field (Transfer Function) 5.Magnetic field uniformity (longitudinal and transversal) 6.Tune stability measurements (cold start and in time)

Temperature Distribution: Non Resettable Stickers (Continue) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests15

Industrial Building #2 Set-Up. More testing 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests16

Power Measurements (for instance here CMD 10 at 300 kHz) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests17

Ni-Zn Ceramic Magnetics Ferrites; comparison 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests18 CMD10 CMD5005 CMD 10 was selected because of its higher curie temperature

Field Distribution Results 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests19 300 kHz5.1 MHz

Tune Stability 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests20 The resonant frequency is considerably stable

Requirements and plan (Production Magnet) 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests21  Change: 18 mm Aperture and 1 meter length  We expect that this new magnet will also meet the requirements for Dissipation, Ferrite Temperature Field uniformity  We propose to confirm this by thoroughly testing the first magnet built RTD in key point along the magnet More Non Resettable Temperature Sensors Field Distribution (Possibly also as a testing tool) Tuning, Stability and Power (measurements) And this is how we are going to proceed:

Conclusions 11/2/2015Luciano Elementi| Magnet and ferrites tests22 The ferrite material has been decided The prototype design met the specification requirements There is a plan for the test and measurements to take place on the first production magnet to confirm that this also meet specifications
