Double Science

Course structure The OCR Gateway Science B course (also known as Core Science) is taken by students in Year 10. The OCR Gateway Additional Science B course is taken by students in Year 11. Assessment for each course consists of 2 exams and 1 piece of coursework. The new terminal rule means that, while the coursework is completed in Year 10 (core) and Year 11 (additional), all the exams have to be taken at the end of Year 11.

Core Science

Exam Dates The exam dates for the Core modules are as follows: –Unit B711 (B1,C1,P1) Wednesday 25th May 2016 @1pm –Unit B712 (B2,C2,P2) Friday 10th June 2016 @9am

Additional Science

Exam Dates The exam dates for the Additional modules are as follows: –Unit B721 (B3,C3,P3) Wednesday 15th June 2016 @1pm –Unit B722 (B4,C4,P4) Friday 17th June 2016 @9am

Coursework The coursework for Core Science should have been completed in Year 10. The coursework for Additional Science should now have been covered in lesson time. Any outstanding work on this is expected to be completed during the after school sessions timetabled on the revision timetable. The deadline for all coursework to be completed is February half term.

Past Papers Past papers are a valuable revision tool. They allow the students to gain experience of answering the same type of question they will have in the exam. There are available from the exam board webpage. OCR Gateway Science B – J261 (from 2012) OCR Gateway Additional Science B – J262 (from 2012)

Approach to Exam Questions The most important thing to do (and obvious) is to read the question. Understand what the question is asking you NOT what you think it is asking. Underline command words (Describe, Explain, Evaluate) and any scientific terms. Practice using the equations, students forget to do this as the equations of provided, but you must be able to use them. Marks are lost through poorly selected and used equations. Make sure you know the UNITS for each equation, as they give the equation at the front of the paper, but not the UNITS.

Six Mark Questions – 3 Per paper

Section D In the B2C2P2 paper for Core and the B4C4P4 paper for Additional there is an extra section that is all about data handling. The information that they need to answer the question is given in the text. This section is worth 10 marks and can make the difference of a grade for that paper.

Tip 1: Read the introduction! Who can remember anything about nuclear radiation? More importantly, do you need to know anything about nuclear radiation to answer this?

Unit Progress Checks To help students identify strengths and focus areas for revision, the Science department has developed a series of progress checks. There is one for each unit with a list of statements saying what is required for each topic. Students can then ‘traffic light’ these to help prepare for revision. An example is shown below: Mini Topic Can you …? RAG 1: Heat & Temperature Recognise and understand the consequences of the direction of energy flow between bodies of different temperatures Describe the terms temperature and heat Understand qualitatively and quantitatively the concept of the specific heat capacity & specific latent heat of a material Use the equation; energy = mass x SHC x temp change Use the equation; energy = mass x specific latent heat Describe what happens to the temperature when materials are boiling, melting or freezing Explain why the temperature does not change during a change of state

Revision Book OCR Gateway B version. colour-coded graded content lots of tried and trusted questions and exam practice detachable answers for flexible practice practical guidance and exam technique tips clear advice on how to move answers up a grade (grade boosters and progression maps) Currently on Amazon for £7.69

Online revision GCSE Bitesize – breaks the course down into small sections with a mini topic test at the end of each revision section. Certain websites will have apps that you can download onto your mobile phone, and you can set them to send you questions that you have to answer in a short amount of time. These are normally in a multiple choice style, just like playing ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’. Example apps are: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/revision-app-ultimate- revision/id451009060?mt=8 http://collinsrevisionapps.co.uk/ http://www.cgpbooks.co.uk/apps/
