CU Boulder Earth Systems Stable Isotope Laboratory Julio Sepúlveda Assistant Professor, Geological Sciences Fellow, Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) jsepulveda@colorado.edu Sebastian Kopf Assistant Professor, Geological Sciences Katie Snell Assistant Professor, Geological Sciences University of Colorado Boulder Geological Sciences

Sustainability, Energy and Environment Complex (SEEC) 1. Organic and Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory

Focus Structural and isotopic characterization of organic molecules (and degradation products) present in modern and ancient environments (e.g., water bodies, soils, microbial systems, sediments, rocks, oils). To support research in the fields of biogeosciences, geobiology/astrobiology, environmental microbiology, energy, and paleoceanography and paleoclimatology, among others. 1. Organic and Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory

Instrumentation Gas Chromatography–QQQ–MS Gas Chromatography–Q–MS – Characterization and quantification of GC- amenable molecules: e.g., aliphatic & aromatic hydrocarbons, sterols, fatty acids Thermo Scientific TSQ 8000 Triple Quadrupole GC-MS/MS 1. Organic and Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory

Instrumentation Liquid Chromatography–MS (QQQ or QTOF) Liquid Chromatography–UV/VIS/PDA – Characterization and quantification of HPLC- amenable molecules: e.g., Intact Polar Lipids (IPLs), amino acids, pigments 1. Organic and Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory AB Sciex UHPLC QTRAP 4500 Tandem mass spectrometry MS/MS

Instrumentation Gas Chromatography–combustion–isotope ratio–MS – Compound-specific isotopic analysis (  13 C and  D) of GC-amenable molecules Thermo Delta V Plus with GC 1. Organic and Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory

CUBES Stable Isotope Laboratory Benson Earth Sciences Focus: Measurement of small abundance isotopologues (e.g. carbonate “clumped” isotope thermometry and method development) for numerous modern and paleo-environmental applications C,H,N,O,S stable isotope ratios of a wide variety of earth materials for applications, including geology, ecology, forensics, microbiology 2. CUBES Stable Isotope Laboratory

Instrumentation Gas source, dual-inlet stable isotope ratio MS – High-precision measurement of small abundance isotopologues Primary application: mass-47 of CO 2 for determining ancient temperatures of carbonate mineral formation – Applications for paleoclimate, tectonics, subsurface fluid flow 2. CUBES Stable Isotope Laboratory Thermo MAT253 Plus with custom designed on-line and off- line vacuum CO2 extraction systems

Instrumentation Gas source, continuous flow stable isotope ratio MS – Elemental Analyzer: wgt % C, N,  13 C &  15 N of organic matter in sediments, soil, plants and animals; both natural and labeled abundances – Headspace Analyzer: Carbonate  13 C &  18 O; Waters –  13 C of DIC;  15 N &  18 O of nitrates/nitrites – High-temperature conversion EA:  18 O &  D of bone, fossils, methane and hydrogen gas, & bulk organic matter, volcanic glass 2.
