3 Reagan’s economic policies affected different groups of Americans in different ways. The wealthy saw their taxes drop along with the deregulation of big industry. The number of American billionaires grew from one in 1978 to 49 in 1987.The number of Americans earning more than $500,000 a year grew by a factor of ten. The Poor Gets Poorer: DIVISIONS IN WEALTH

6 With leaders like Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and Jerry Falwell, evangelical Christians made up a bulk of the proponents of the New Right, while conservative radio personalities like Rush Limbaugh fueled the movement and stoked the belief that the United States had separated from its Christian principles. They protested what some saw the general permissiveness of American secular society on television. Reagan did, at times, make appearances with members of the New Right, giving the movement mainstream leverage. Argument: Left-Wing Opposition: CULTURE WARS

7 Along with increasing divisions in wealth and the culture wars, a third social crisis emerged in the 1980s. AIDS (Autoimmune Deficiency Syndrome) is a deadly disease that attacks a person’s immune system, the system that powers a person’s body to fight other diseases. 8 Keith Allen Haring was an artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s by expressing concepts of birth, death and war. He was born in 1958, died in 1990. You may have seen some of his work earlier. Some of the prints are quite famous and used both as print and textile design. Artist Keith Haring became a sensation in the art world with his cartoon and graffiti, which influenced works during the 1980s THE ARTIST : Keith Allen Haring
