18 Do I qualify for student finance? The conditions you have to meet to qualify for student finance concern: Personal eligibility Your course The university or college you plan to go to The number of years for which you are eligible for funding is calculated as: Length of current course + one additional year – years of previous study

19 Personal eligibility You can apply if all of the following apply: you’re a UK national or have ‘settled status’ (no restrictions on how long you can stay) you normally live in England you’ve been living in the UK for 3 years before starting your course

20 Your university or college Your course must be in the UK and one of the following: a first degree, eg BA, BSc or BEd a Foundation Degree a Certificate/Diploma of Higher Education a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) Initial Teacher Training

21 The student finance options include: Tuition fee loan Maintenance loan for living costs (eg books, accommodation, food) Benefits – for disabilities or dependents Travel grants - if you’re attending a clinical placement in the UK or studying abroad as part of your course. It covers reasonable travel expenses during the academic year. You have to pay the first £303 of your travel costs but depending on your household income you can claim back anything you spend over this amount. Bursaries and scholarships

22 Tuition fee loan Fees can be up to £9000 per year and you can get a loan to cover the full fee Paid directly to your university Doesn’t have to be paid back until you have left your course and are earning over £21,000 pa You pay interest from the time your first payment is made until you pay your loan back in full. 24 Maintenance Loan Helps to cover living costs throughout the academic year Any student eligible for student finance is also available for the Maintenance Loan Everyone can get up to 65% of this loan, the remaining 35% is dependent on household income Paid in 3 instalments directly into your bank account Paid back once you have left your course and are earning over £21,000

Full-time studentLoan for courses from September 2016 Living at home Up to £6,904 Living away from home, outside London Up to £8,200 Living away from home, in London Up to £10,702 Living and studying abroad for at least one term as part of your course Up to £9,391 Repayments are on the same basis as the tuition fee loan.

28 How do I get my money? Once you have applied, you will be sent a Financial Notification letter and a Payment Schedule When you register at your university or college, take your Payment Schedule letter Your university will confirm to Student Finance that you are on the course Your student finance will then be released
