3 Washing your hands & covering your mouth is important. Prevent infections & stop the spread of disease! EBP: In the United States, hospital patients get nearly two million infections each year. That’s about 1 infection per 20 patients. EBP : Hand hygiene, a term applied to either a thorough washing of hands with soap and water for at least 15 seconds or the application of 3 to 5 ml of an alcohol-based antiseptic solution, has been reported as the most significant method to reduce healthcare- associated infections (HAIs). To make a difference in your own health and those around you!

5 When to Wash Hands Before, during, and after preparing food Before eating food Before and after caring for someone who is sick Before and after treating a cut or wound After using the toilet After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing After touching an animal or animal waste After handling pet food or pet treats After touching garbage After touching surfaces of the facility (bed rails, tables, doorknobs, remote controls & phones) Don’t forget!! 6 How do we wash our hands? Soap and water: Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold) and apply soap. Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Rinse your hands well under running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Antibacterial solution: Check bottle to see how much to use & apply to hands. Rub hands together, making sure you get the areas in between your fingers & around and under your nails. Rub until your hands are dry. (It should take you 15 seconds ) No need to rinse or dry.

7 Covering your Mouth Cover your mouth when you have to cough or sneeze! Use a tissue and dispose of it in the waste basket. If you do not have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your elbow. Immediately wash hands with soap & water or with alcohol based sanitizer.
