3 The Goals of Health Care Health care professionals include school nurses, counselors, health teachers, dental hygienists, and dietitians. They: Provide treatment for diseases and injuries. Provide wellness exams to prevent diseases and injuries. Work to educate people and help them stay healthy.

4 The Goals of Health Care (cont’d.) Some health care professionals provide general care, while others have special training to handle specific medical problems. The health care professionals who provide checkups and general care are called primary care providers. The health care professionals who are trained to treat patients who have problems in specific areas are called specialists.

5 Health Care Facilities Health care is available in many different places. These include the following: School nurses’ offices Doctors’ offices Clinics Hospitals Emergency rooms

6 Health Insurance Medical care is often very expensive. To pay for health care, many people buy health insurance. Health insurance is a plan in which a person pays a set fee to an insurance company in return for the company’s agreement to pay some or all medical expenses.

7 Private Health Care Plans Many people receive health services through managed care plans. These health plans emphasize preventive medicine and work to control the cost and maintain the quality of health care. Types of managed care include the following: Health maintenance organization (HMO). Health maintenance organization (HMO) Preferred provider organization (PPO). Preferred provider organization (PPO) Point-of-service (POS) plan. Point-of-service (POS) plan

8 Government Health Care Programs All states, counties, and most large cities have health departments. Health departments: Develop health-related policies and laws. Work to maintain community health standards. Provide health-related information, services, and programs. These programs include immunizations and well-baby checkups.
