2 Seasonal Flu Vaccine Supply June 2009 vaccine manufacturers state 118 million doses of seasonal flu vaccine will be produced August 2009 numbers revised to 114 million doses produced Represents ~3% reduction from original projection Amount of vaccine distributed similar to 2008- 2009 flu season

6 Long-Term Care Facilities (LTCF) Affected Reports of vaccine shortages among LTCFs –Orders canceled or reduced Additional 500,000 doses made available for LTCF in December Pharmacies, supermarkets, community vaccinators provided vaccine

8 Demand Remains High Cumulative seasonal influenza vaccination coverage since August was 42% by Jan 2 Demand for seasonal vaccine remains higher than supply (139-173 million vs. 114 available) –Majority of people report they have gotten, will definitely get, or will probably get seasonal flu vaccine (58%)

9 Outlook for Next Season ACIP Influenza Work Group considering universal flu recommendation –Begin 2010-2011 –Two stage Encourage for 2010-2011 Full implementation 2011-2012 Fluzone High Dose Vaccine –High-dose seasonal flu vaccine for persons ≥65 years –Contains 4 x amount of antigen –FDA licensed December

10 Outlook for Next Season (2) Preliminary reports indicate manufacturers plan to make at least as much vaccine as this year –Will this be enough? Vaccine composition –Strains will be identified at VRBPAC* meeting in February –Likely include 2009 H1N1 strain *Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee
