3. 43 years since Roe v Wade  In 1970, Norma McCorvey (aka Jane Roe), an unmarried pregnant woman in Texas, challenged a state law forbidding doctors to perform an abortion unless a woman’s life was in danger. In a landmark 1973 ruling, SCOTUS legalized abortion under the right to privacy. Since then, however, the court’s ruling has been narrowed by other court decisions and federal legislation.

4. Supreme Court Cases and key legislation  Griswold v Connecticut (1965) – Right to Privacy case. Challenged the law forbidding married couples from purchasing birth control (holdover from Comstock laws of 19 th century). SCOTUS stated that the outlawing of contraceptives to be unconstitutional.  Roe v Wade (1973): Right to Privacy. Legalized abortion in the U.S. Struck down all anti-abortion laws  Hyde Amendmen t (1976): Banned the use of Medicaid and other federal funds for abortions. Upheld by SCOTUS in 1980.  Webster v Reproductive Health Services (1989): Barred the use of public facilities for abortions is found constitutional. It marks the first time SCOTUS does not explicitly reaffirm Roe v Wade.  Planned Parenthood v Casey (1992): Allowed states to restrict access to abortion. Court upholds mandatory 24 hr. waiting period and parental-consent laws.  Hyde Amendment (1993): No federal funds can be used for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or the life of the mother is in danger.  Hill v Colorado (2000): Abortion protestors cannot come within 8 feet of people and entering or exiting a health care facility
