VISHAL FACHARA (130890119025) ABHISHEK REVAR (130890119001) DHRUV BAKORI (130890119004) SANKET CHANGELA (130890119010) lathe machine

Introduction Lathe is forerunner of all machine tools Lathe is one of the most important machine tools in the metal working industry. A lathe operates on the principle of a rotating work piece and a fixed cutting tool. Lathe machine is also known as “ Parent of the entire tool family”.

Lathe Machine

History The inventor of center lathe is Henry Maudsley. Here an interesting thing is he was an outstandingly Brilliant medical student.

Types of Lathes Engine lathe:- The most common form of lathe, motor driven and comes in large variety of sizes and shapes.  Not production lathe, found in school shops, tool rooms, and job shops  Primarily for single piece or short runs  Manually operated

Engine Lathe

Types of Lathes Turret lathe:-  Used when many duplicate parts required  Equipped with multisided tool post (turret) to which several different cutting tools mounted  Employed in given sequence

Turret Lathe

Types of Lathe Bench Lathe:- A bench top model usually of low power used to make precision machine small work pieces.

Types of Lathe Tracer Lathe:- A lathe that has the ability to follow a template to copy a shape or contour.

Types of Lathe Automatic Lathe:- A lathe in which the work piece is automatically fed and removed without use of an operator. It requires very less attention after the setup has been made and the machine loaded.

Types of Lathe CNC Lathe:- A highly automated lathe, where both cutting, loading, tool changing, and part unloading are automatically controlled by computer coding.

Parts of Lathe

Lathe Bed This is heavy rugged casting made to support the working parts of lathe and also guide and align major parts of lathe.

Head Stock The headstock houses the main spindle, speed change mechanism, and change gears. The headstock is required to be made as robust as possible due to the cutting forces involved, which can distort a lightly built housing. Induce harmonic vibrations that will transfer through the work piece, reducing the quality of the finished work piece.

Head Stock

Quick change gear box Contains number of different-size gears Provides feed rod and lead-screw with various speeds for turning and thread-cutting operations

Carriage Used to move cutting tool along lathe bed Consists of three main parts Saddle Cross-slide Apron

Carriage

Cross Slide Mounted on top of saddle Provides manual or automatic cross movement for cutting tool.

Tail Stock It is also known as foot stock. It used to apply support to the longitudinal rotary axis of a work piece.

Types of chuck Three jaw chuck:- - For holding cylindrical stock centered. - For holding cylindrical stock centered. - For facing/center drilling, etc. - For facing/center drilling, etc.

Types of chuck Four jaw chuck:- This is independent chuck generally has four jaws, which are adjusted individually on the chuck face by means of adjusting screws.

Types of chuck Collet chuck:- Collet chuck is used to hold small work pieces.

Types of chuck Magnetic Chuck:- Thin jobs can be held by means of magnetic chucks.

Operations Turning:- To remove material from the outside diameter of a work piece to obtain a finished surface.

Operations Facing:- To produce a flat surface at the end of the work piece or for making face grooves.

Operations Boring:- To enlarge a hole or cylindrical cavity made by a previous process or to produce circular internal grooves.

Operations Drilling:- To produce a hole on the work piece.

Operations Reaming:- To finishing the drilled hole.

Operations Threading:- To produce external or internal threads on the work piece.

Operations Knurling:- To produce a regularly shaped roughness on the work piece.
