3 Corporate Philanthropy Corporate philanthropy or corporate giving is the act of corporations donating some of their profits, or their resources, to non-profit organisations. Corporate giving is often handled by the corporation, directly, or it may be done through a company foundation. Corporations most commonly donate cash, but they also donate the use of their facilities, property, services, or advertising support. 4 Corporate Philanthropy Corporations give to all kinds of non-profit groups, from education and the arts to human services and the environment. The company is respected as a good corporate citizen in the eyes of the charities served and the communities in which it does business. 7 Corporate Social Responsibility Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is about understanding your business' impact on the wider world and considering how you can use this impact in a positive way. It means taking a responsible attitude, going beyond the minimum legal requirements for a firm to pursue long term goals that are good for society The continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as that of the local community and society at large

9 Corporate Social Responsibility (continued) The more visible aspect of CSR is a corporation's willingness to promote and support community, national, and global causes. Corporations do this through corporate philanthropy, cause-related marketing, and sponsorships. CSR aspires to honour people, planet, profits...in that order.

10 Dimensions of corporate responsibility Economic - responsibility to earn profit for owners Legal - responsibility to comply with the law (society’s codification of right and wrong) Ethical - not acting just for profit but doing what is right, just and fair Voluntary and philanthropic - promoting human welfare and goodwill Being a good corporate citizen contributing to the community and the quality of life http://tutor2u.net/

11 The corporate responsibility view Businesses do not have an unquestioned right to operate in society Those managing business should recognise that they depend on society Business relies on inputs from society and on socially created institutions There is a social contract between business and society involving mutual obligations that society and business recognise that they have to each other

12 Arguments for socially-responsible behaviour 1. It is the ethical thing to do. 2. It improves the business’ public image. Building a reputation as a responsible business sets a business apart. 3. Activities such as involvement with the local community are ideal opportunities to generate positive press coverage. 4. Companies often favour suppliers who demonstrate responsible policies, as this can have a positive impact on how they are perceived by customers.

13 Arguments for socially-responsible behaviour 5. Some customers don't just prefer to deal with responsible companies, but insist on it. 6. Reducing resource use, waste and emissions doesn't just help the environment - it saves businesses money too. 7. A good reputation makes it easier to recruit employees. Employees may stay longer, reducing the costs and disruption of recruitment and retraining.

It is necessary in order to avoid excessive regulation. Good relationships with local authorities make doing business easier.

Investors recognise this and are more willing to finance these businesses. It will be attractive to some investors 12. Socially responsible actions can be profitable 13. There is clearly an overlap between CSR and business ethics Both concepts concern values, objectives and decision based on something other than the pursuit of profits And socially responsible firms must act ethically CSR is about the organisation’s obligations to all stakeholders – and not just shareholders.

17 Business ethics and corporate social responsibility As recently as a decade ago, many companies viewed business ethics only in terms of administrative compliance with legal standards and adherence to internal rules and regulations. Today the situation is different. Attention to business ethics is on the rise across the world and many companies realize that in order to succeed, they must earn the respect and confidence of their customers.
