THE 5 P’S of PERFORMANCE PRESENT PROCESS POSITIVE PERSPECTIVE PRACTICE

THE 5 P’S of PERFORMANCE 1. Be in the PRESENT Moment O Allow Yourself to Flush the Bad O One Play at a Time

THE 5 P’S of PERFORMANCE 2. Focus on the PROCESS O Control What You Can Control O If it Ain’t Broke… Break It! O Figure out why you’re doing well and then work on making it better. O Replay Your Success O Mimic your successful outings as often as possible.

EXPENSIVE vs. INEXPENSIVE EXPERIENCE  Expensive Experience What you learn as a player through your own actions - good or bad.  Inexpensive Experience Learning from those who have gone before you. Be a student of the game!!

THE 5 P’S of PERFORMANCE 3. Have a POSITIVE Mindset O Positive thinking does not guarantee success but it does give you a chance to be successful. O There is a guarantee with negative thinking. O Ask yourself: “What am I trying to do?” O Avoid comments like: “I don’t want this to happen”, “don’t hang the curve ball”, “If I miss this free throw _____.” (don’t hang the curveball=hang the curveball). O The Black Box – the box with the information that tells what happened during a good or bad outing O locate it and learn from it (Expensive Experience)

THE 5 P’S of PERFORMANCE 5. Have Quality PRACTICE O Go on a mission. Have Intent. Have a Purpose. O Slow down your process. O It’s not circuit training (quantity reps vs. quality reps).

DAILY IMPLEMENTATION Practice is where the action is… O Practice what you’ll do in a game physically and mentally. O Do not wait until game time to work on the mental game. O The Hour Glass O Don’t Confuse Routine with Commitment O The quality of your practice is your responsibility. O Have a purpose or mission. O Have present moment focus. O Bring energy every day!! O Practice one play at a time. O Make practice as game like as possible.

A PLAYER’S MENTALITY O Player Tendencies – tendency for players to fall in one of these categories when things don’t go as planned: O Primal – throws/swings harder when adversity hits (Tries too hard. Presses) O Prayer – prays a lot, “I hope…” O Perfect – nibbles, “I just missed…”

Peak Performance  Flow only occurs when you ALLOW it to occur.  All 3 aspects must be balanced and under control.  Balanced control can be understood and learned.  Proper preparation and appropriate interventions is the key to Peak Performance.  Peak Performance is a “mood”. Cognitive Environment Physical

Peak Performance O Athletes that understand and control both the mental and environmental aspects of performance will experience consistency from performance to performance. O You can’t control what happens around you, but you can control how you choose to react. O You must be in control of yourself before you can control your performance.
