3  The insurance market of Iran is comprised of 25 insurance companies with 850 branches, 25,304 insurance agents, 384 official brokers, 3,956 life insurance agents and 106 loss adjusters which were active in the country. With the increase in the number of insurance companies, the employment in the insurance industry has risen sizably over the years. In the year 2011, 16,333 persons were working in the insurance industry of Iran. The insurance industry of Islamic Republic of Iran accounted for 0.15% of the total premiums generated in the global insurance market in the year 2011. The insurance premiums underwritten in the country has increased robustly during the last five years from USD ~ million in 2007 to USD ~ million in 2012 registering a CAGR of 26.6% during 2007-2012. The global rank of the insurance industry of the country is 44 th in terms of total premiums underwritten.

4  The insurance market of Iran is categorized into life and non-life insurance. Non-life insurance dominates the insurance market of the country and accounts for 90.8% of the gross insurance premiums generated in the country. The life insurance segment represents the rest of the 9.2% of the insurance premiums underwritten in the country. Iran’s non-life insurance market is classified into thirteen segments which include motor third party liability, health, motor property damage, liability, fire, accident, engineering, cargo/marine, oil and energy, aviation, credit, hull and others. Motor third party liability is the largest non-life insurance segment and contributes ~% to the non-life premiums generated in the country. This is followed by health which contributes 21.1% in terms of gross premiums underwritten.

5  The motor third party liability insurance is the compulsory civil liability insurance of the owners of land motor vehicles in the country in accordance with the Islamic Penal Law. The insurance companies in the country generated USD ~ million of compulsory motor third party liability insurance premiums in 2012 which increased from USD ~ million of premiums in the year 2007 registering a robust growth at a CAGR of 26.9% during 2007- 2012. The share of the segment also increased from 47.1% in 2007 to 49.5% in 2012 in the non-life insurance market of the country.

6  Health insurance is the most important segment in the insurance market of Iran in two ways. It is the second largest non-life segment after motor third party liability insurance with a share of 21.1% in 2012. Secondly, it is the fastest growing insurance segment in the Iran’s insurance market which has witnessed a CAGR of 49.5% during 2007- 2012. Due to the high growth, the share of the health segment in the non-life premiums generated in the country has also increased substantially from 8.9% in 2007 to 21.1% in 2012. The health insurance premiums in the country are therefore estimated to increase to USD 8,895.8 million in 2017 from USD ~ million in 2012.

7  Iran Insurance (Bimeh Iran) is the largest player in insurance market of Iran. It is a state owned company and holds ~% of market share in terms of gross written premiums. This is followed by Asia which is second largest player and accounts for ~% of the total gross premiums. Alborz is the third largest player with a share of ~% followed by Parsian with a contribution of ~%.
