NetWare Novell’s network operating system Biggest competitor – Microsoft Windows

NetWare e-Directory Process to store network objects (usernames, passwords, groups, permissions) in a database that is distributed among servers. Old name: NDS – Novell Directory Services Platform independent Partitioning – dividing the database Replication – distributing the database among the servers Uses X.500 specifications Tree structure of all network devices

File Systems All areas of the disk may be available to users depending on permissions. Users can map to those areas (volumes). Utilizes file caching – when a volume is initialized, the FAT is copied into memory along with parts of another table – DET (directory entry table) – makes NetWare efficient.

Administration Disk management – partitioning, RAID configuration – handled on the server User management – creating accounts and groups, granting permissions – handled on a workstation

Administrative Tools NetWare Administrator Managing disk ConsoleOne Java-based application User management File and print services Best Most comprehensive file system security More specific rights (copy inhibit)

Authentication Passwords – not case sensitive Requires: Username Password Which NDS tree Location of user object in NDS tree

Applications Can usually find an application to suit your needs Not as prevalent as Windows and Linux applications
