7 SCHOOL OF PHARMACY & LIFE SCIENCES Deafness in the UK 1 More than 10 million people in the UK have some form of hearing loss More than 800,000 have severe deafness Commonest type of hearing loss is age- related 72% of those over 70 years of age have some kind of hearing loss 1. 8 SCHOOL OF PHARMACY & LIFE SCIENCES Sight loss in the UK 2 2 million people live with sight loss More likely to experience sight loss as get older 1 in 5 people aged 75 and over affected by sight loss Major cause of blindness is age-related macular degeneration, also glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy 2. 13 SCHOOL OF PHARMACY & LIFE SCIENCES Task 1 Put on ‘instant disability’ –glasses smeared with a little bit of white soft paraffin –ear plugs –over-sized rubber gloves

14 SCHOOL OF PHARMACY & LIFE SCIENCES Health and safety consideration Vision and hearing: please be careful – you may feel disorientated while wearing the smeared glasses/ ear plugs Allergy: if you are allergic to rubber/latex, please do not use the gloves or plasters Mobility: please be aware that your spatial awareness may be affected. Please take care when moving around the room. In case of emergency please remember to remove your glasses and ear plugs
