2 SOME ANSWERS – PERIOD 3 The storm formed over the tropical Atlantic Ocean, where the warm temperatures caused more evaporation and for larger storm clouds to form. The winds pushed the storm from The Bahamas and Florida westward, over New Orleans and Louisiana/Mississippi. The more the clouds and winds formed, the worse the storm became, building in intensity.

4 SOME ANSWERS – PERIODS 4 AND 5 Water can carry diseases, like cholera and typhoid. Water can cause people to drown. Storms that cause flooding and other damage can be life-threatening.

6 WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HURRICANES? Write your name, date, period # on your paper. Make a heading: Prior Knowledge of Hurricanes List any things you have heard on the news, read about, studied, etc.

7 SHARE OUR BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Listen to your classmates’ prior knowledge. Do you think everything shared is scientifically accurate? Why or why not? What would you need to do to separate fact from “heresy” (what people believe to be true regardless of evidence)?

8 FACT CHECK! Follow up on what people say they think is true by reading multiple articles and verifying if the same facts are stated. Use trusted websites and video sources that are known to be accurate, and not based on opinion or sensationalism!

9 DEFINITION OF A HURRICANE A hurricane is a severe tropical storm with high winds and heavy rain.

10 HURRICANE KATRINA Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the surrounding area in August, 2005. Some of the worst damage ever in a natural disaster in the U.S. occurred.
