Mock Action Research Proposal Presentation Kimberly Jose EDU 671 Instructor Tony Valley

Area of Focus The focus of my action research is to ensure the academic success of all the students in my class, specifically the ELL students.

Research Questions Best strategies for ELL engagement and participation in the classroom? What are some effective methods that will promote tolerance in the classroom to encourage ELL involvement? How do I ensure the success of my ELL students while still academically challenging my mainstream students?

Variables The hypothetical classroom I am teaching is made up of 25 students total, four of which are ELL students. I chose these students because it provides the diversity of learning needs in the classroom that would often be seen in most inner city schools. (Jose, 2013)

Active support from students as well as parents and fellow faculty members is imperative. Before the research begins, all parties will be informed of the intent and purpose of the research as well as any concerns will be addressed Checks and balances from more experienced peers or administrators will also be an important aspect of my research to ensure nothing is being overlooked as a new teacher researcher.

Implementing & Action Plan -The action plan is to attempt multiple strategies that my peers have found successful in their integrated classrooms (see scholarly articles on resources page). -These implementations include small group work or pairs (mix of ELL and non-ELL or different levels), utilization of realia to engage conversation, use of vocabulary words and terms in attempt to relate to ELL students and encourage engagement.

This will include more detailed observations in the classroom and implanting different strategies and methods of teaching the class to see which would generate better results for each student. This will benefit the students because it will allow me to see what will help them absorb more information, engage every student in the curriculum and hopefully create a more cohesive and welcoming environment (Jose, 2013).

Timeline The initial observation will serve as my “control”, if you will. The first marking period of the school year will to be gather data and observations pre- action plan The second marking period will mark the commencement of the research and the collection of data. By the third marking period, I would like to have a concrete idea as to which strategies are most effective in resolving my research questions.

Collection would include notes from video recordings in the classroom (third party perspective), teacher observations, student interviews or surveys & assessments. Their grades on assignments during the marking period will help as qualitative data to measure success.
