Functions of cardiovascular system L3

Aim To identify the functions of the cardiovascular system and blood.

Functions What are they? Can you guess? 1.Delivery of oxygen and nutrients 2.Removal of waste products 3.Thermoregulation

1. Delivery of oxygen and nutrients and removal of waste products Your body needs a constant supply of oxygen, blood is used to help transport the oxygen to all of the body’s cells (e.g. Muscle cells) The left hand side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body and particularly the cells of the brain, muscle, kidneys and liver and all the other organs. The cells then take the oxygen and use it to produce energy.

1. Delivery of oxygen and nutrients This is called metablosim and it produces waste products, such as carbon dioxide. The deoxygenated blood then continues its journey back to the heart, enters the right hand side and is pumped to the lungs. In the lungs the blood becomes oxygenated and the waste product carbon dioxide is UNLOADED and exhaled.

Blood

Blood transports nutrients and oxygen to the cells.  Oxygen  Glucose  Proteins  Fats  Vitamins  Enzymes  Platelets  Carbon Dioxide  Electrolytes  Hormones

Make up of blood Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets Plasma

Red blood cells Blood is a gloopy substance, it is made up of 55% plasma and 45% solids.

Red blood cells 99% of blood cells found in the body are red blood cells (Erythrocytes). They are red because of the red coloured protein called HAEMOGLOBIN There are 5 million red blood cells for 1mm₃ volume of blood.

White blood cells Leukocytes Colourless Transparent 1:700 ratio of white blood cells to red blood cells. Role: to fight infection, they destroy bacteria and other dangerous organisms (i.e. Remove disease from the body)

Platelets Are not full cells but part of cells Role: stop blood loss through clotting. They become ‘sticky’ when in contact with the air to help repair tissue. Factor 8 is also needed to help clot

Plasma Is the liquid part of the blood, which is straw coloured in appearance. It is the solution in which all solids are carried.

TASK In three groups, using the flip chart paper, design a poster explaining the functions of the cardiovascular system and of the blood.
