3 3/16 MARITIME AFFAIRS Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (..) the data collected through these observations can only generate knowledge and innovation if Europe's engineers and scientists are able to find, access, assemble and apply them efficiently and rapidly. At present this is often not the case.

4 Background – the framework June 12, 2016 4 EMODnet Marine Knowledge 2020 Overall definition and scope: Marine Knowledge 2020 brings together marine data from different sources with the aim of: Helping industry, public authorities and researchers find the data and make more effective use of them to develop new products and services. Blue growth ( aquaculture, coastal tourism, marine biotechnology, ocean energy, seabed mining ) Supporting environmental protection needs (Marine Strategy Framework Directive). Implemented through an European Marine Observation and Data Network

5 June 12, 2016 5 EMODnet The objective is to assemble existing data from public and private organisations relating to the state of sea basins; processing them into interoperable formats which includes agreed standards, common baselines or reference conditions; assessments of their accuracy and precision and creating data products;

6 2009: Start EMODnet phase 1: : 59 Institutes - Budget €6.45 million 2013: Start EMODnet phase 2: (120 Institutes - Budget €16.3 million) Seven lots Lot 1 bathymetry: hydrography– bathymetry (water depth) and topography, underwater features Lot 2 geology: seabed substrata, strata, coastal erosion, geological hazards Lot 3 physical habitats: classification of seabed habitats, based on physical parameters Lot 4 chemistry: concentrations of chemicals (nutrients, contaminants) in water, sediments and biota Lot 5 biology: distribution and abundance of living species Lot 6 physics: temperature, salinity, waves, currents, sea-level, water clarity (light penetration) Lot 7 human activity

14 Species attributes workshop (13 December 2012): A one day workshop. Purpose: (1) look at existing initiatives (2) discuss and prioritize attribute and trait information (3) implement a data grant system (4) discuss vocabulary

15 Conclusions attributes workshop (13 December 2012): A one day workshop. 1. We will make an overall classification of life history traits to be implemented in WoRMS High level classification provisional trait list, based on identified sources (February 2013)  that will be input for a common standard, that should be published as a synthesis paper (also proposed for EMODnet 2 biology project). 2. EMODnet can find a few demonstration projects by taxonomic editors. These projects should be based on broad category classification. The total funding available for these projects is around 80,000 Euros

16 Conclusions attributes workshop (13 December 2012): A one day workshop. 3. Important traits, from a data management point of view, which we can start completing within WoRMS are: Benthos-plankton-size (life stage dependent) Marine-fresh; depth ranges 4. Legal attributes, management attributes, as required by EMODnet can be added by the WoRMS data management team, by consulting the available legal sources. the existing database on invasive species can be uploaded into WoRMS.

20 Expectations from workshop Do we need a higher classification of traits? If yes, agreement on overall structure How do we develop vocabulary (definitions of words) of traits? How do we choose which terms (modalities) to choose for a trait? who will manages vocab (editors in chief, categorical editors) how will we manage vocab What principles for prioritization data collation (one trait, two traits, more?) Who (trait editors) will collect data How (through subcontracts, call for proposals to editors) How to provide data (excel template, web interface?) Where (WoRMS website or separate trait website?) to display the trait data Think of demonstration of use case(s) to highlight the value of the collection of this data (important for DGMARE)
