SLIDE OVERVIEW This presentation will discuss the following This presentation will discuss the following : What a Virus is… How a Virus works… Effects that Viruses have on Computer Users Types of Viruses Viruses that have been in the past Interesting Facts about Viruses Prevention of Viruses

A virus is a computer program that is designed to duplicate itself and spread to other computers

A virus attaches itself to a program and anytime the program is running the virus will run as well. This gives the virus a chance to duplicate and spread to other programs. One way viruses are most easily spread is by email attachments, where they can be disguised as funny images, greeting cards, and even audio and video files. They can also be hidden in downloads used on the Internet, like in pirated software or any other kind of file you can download.

Viruses are created for some of the following reasons… Taking control of a computer and using it for certain tasks Theft of personal information ( credit card numbers, passwords, personal data, etc.) Make a computer network slower Revenge purposes (To prove a point, that the system is not invincible and can be broken into)

Viruses can show us how unprotected/ susceptible we really are while using the computer Corrupt files and slow down computer It can interfere with our productivity on the computer In the end viruses can cause a lot of financial problems if let go too long (losing computer and valuable information)

Mydoom Virus in January 2004 infected almost 1 million computers in as little as one day Melissa Virus in March 1999 was powerful enough to have Microsoft and various other companies to shut down emailing systems until the virus could finally be stopped. Storm Worm in January 2007 was said to have infected 50,000 computers by October of that year.

MAC computers are considered to be safer, but not totally free of viruses One of the first known viruses was the named the “Creeper” in 1971

Make sure you install a firewall Anti Spyware, which includes many different options like having trial periods to test out the spyware before buying it or some may not have any cost at all. Update anti virus software regularly Back up computer regularly

I think with enough knowledge about viruses and the right kind of software they can almost be preventable, you just have to use common sense. Don’t open emails and download software that does not look like it is from a reliable source Download Software that prevents and helps protect against viruses
