2 Available (Adj)  Ready for use, at hand  Syn: obtainable, on hand  Ant: unobtainable, not to be had  Mangos are always available during the summer months, but they are more difficult to obtain during the winter.

3 Cater (V)  To satisfy the needs of, try to make things easy and pleasant; to supply food and service  Syn: pamper, indulge, gratify  Ant: frustrate, deny, refuse  When the children were sick, the mom tried to cater to their every need; she gave them milkshakes and French fries, while bringing them board games and movies.

4 Customary (Adj)  Usual, expected, routine  Syn: regular, normal, traditional  Ant: strange, odd, untraditional  In Germany, it is customary for children to leave their shoes outside on St. Nicholas Day, in anticipation of St. Nicholas’s arrival.

5 Dissuade (V)  To persuade not to do something  Syn: talk out of  Ant: persuade, talk into  I am glad that my mom dissuaded me from dying my hair purple.

6 Entrepreneur (N)  A person who starts up and takes on the risk of a business  Syn: businessperson  The entrepreneur created a new business that would allow teenagers to purchase clothes from all over the world with a single click.

7 Firebrand (N)  A piece of burning wood; a troublemaker; an extremely energetic or emotional person  Syn: hothead, agitator  Ant: peacemaker, pacifier, conciliator  The firebrand immediately tried to get the other student in trouble.

8 Hazard (N) (V)  Risk; peril; to expose to danger or harm, to gamble  Syn: danger, venture  Sharp pieces of glass and broken bottles are definite hazards if you are walking in bare feet.

9 Hinder (V)  To delay; to stop or prevent from happening.  Syn: interrupt, impeded, block, thwart  Ant: encourage, further  The snowy, icy roads hindered my plans of going to see a movie.

10 Homicide (N)  The killing of one person by another  Syn: Manslaughter  Since the sister killed her brother, in court she was found guilty of homicide.

11 Indifference (N)  A lack of interest or concern  Syn: apathy, unconcern  Ant: interest, concern, enthusiasm  The students regarded the work with an mood of indifference; they did not care about their grades or the quality of the word they produced.

15 Indispensable (Adj)  Absolutely necessary, not to be neglected  Syn: essential, crucial  Ant: unnecessary, nonessential  The study of grammar is indispensable; you cannot read or write without understanding its basic tenants.

16 Lubricate (V)  To apply oil or grease; to make smooth, slippery, or easier to use  Syn: Oil  Each morning, the workers at Hershey Park lubricated the rollercoaster tracks so that the equipment would run smoothly.

17 Mutual (Adj)  Shared, felt, or shown equally by two or more  Syn: two-sided, joint, shared, reciprocal  Ant: one-sided, unilateral  Marriage was based on mutual respect.

18 Pelt (V)  To throw a stream of things; to strike successively; to hurry.  Syn: bombard, shower  My obnoxious brother pelted me with snowballs as soon as I walked out of my house.

19 Plague (N) (V)  An easily spread disease causing a large number of deaths; a widespread evil; to annoy or bother.  Syn: epidemic, pestilence, pester, vex  Ant: boon, blessing  Ebola is a plague that killed many people in Africa, including volunteers who were trying to help.

20 Poised (Adj)  Balanced, suspended; calm, controlled, ready for action.  Syn: collected, self-confident, ready  Ant: nervous, tense  The ballerina, though young, was poised as she glided across the stage.

21 Regime (N)  A government in power; a form or system of rule or management; a period of rule.  Syn: Rule  The regime that was in power during the early 20 th century was known for its fair taxes and just courts.

22 Transparent (Adj)  Allowing light to pass through; easily recognized or understood; easily seen through or detected.  Syn: clear, translucent, obvious  Ant: frosted, sooty, smoky, unclear, indistinct  The water in the Caribbean was so transparent that even 15 feet off the shore, you could clearly see the bottom.

23 Unscathed (Adj)  Wholly unharmed, not injured.  Syn: unhurt, sound, intact  Ant: injured, damaged, hurt  Even though the car was wrecked, the family was miraculously unscathed.
