Coyote Trail Science Fair Information Set up: Wednesday, February 5th; 8:00am cafeteria Open House: Wednesday, February 5th; 5-7pm cafeteria Take Home Projects: Thursday, February 6 th

The Coyote Trail Science Fair provides an opportunity for all students to have fun with science, and to learn about the principles of logic and scientific deduction. Everyone is encouraged to participate. So, pick a question! Research the question, do an experiment, and present what you have learned at the science fair.

What You Need to Know 1)You are in charge! You pick the topic and you decide how to go about doing your project. 2)You can do a project on your own or with (at most) one friend. 3) Share what you have learned using a simple display format. NO report is required! 4) To get started, you need to submit the Project Entry Form to your teacher or to the office by Friday, January 24 th, 2014 5) All Grades are encouraged to participate. 1st, 2 nd, 3 rd, and Honorable Mention Ribbons will be awarded in grades K-6.

The Scientific Method When conducting a science experiment, one should use the scientific method. The scientific method is an orderly system used to solve problems. 1. Identify the Problem 2. Collect all available information 3. Develop a hypothesis 4. Design an experiment before doing it 5. Perform an experiment to test your hypothesis 6. Observe, record, and analyze your data 7. Repeat the experiment 8. Draw conclusions about the experiment from analyzed data 9. Applications (how it applies to real life situations)

Science Board (See sample below) Include: Clear & specific Question Hypothesis Complete & thorough Directions/Procedure Data Results Conclusion

There are lots of great science fair sites on the internet. The following sites offer science fair resources, advice, and various ideas to start your project: http://ScienceBuddies.org http://www.stemnet.nf.ca/sciencefairs/elem.html http://www.isd77.k12.mn.us/resources/cf http://school.discoveryeducation.com/sciencefaircentral/elmers/250p rojectideas.htmlhttp://school.discoveryeducation.com/sciencefaircentral/elmers/250p rojectideas.html http://scienceclub.org/scifair.html http://www.scifair.org/ http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com/ Make sure you follow the rules for SCIENCE SAFETY and WORKING WITH ANIMALS. **Please check SARSEF rules for use of people/animals in experiments. These experiments must be pre-approved by the organization to be judged** www.sarsef.org www.sarsef.org

This rubric (or one very similar) will be used to judge the projects to determine the winners.

Students who are eligible to participate in SARSEF will be notified and paperwork will be sent home. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your student’s teacher or Amanda Knutson (6 th grade teacher) a.j.knutson@maranausd.org a.j.knutson@maranausd.org
