Future success of IPTV will heavily depend on its ability to support multiple streams of HD video By overcoming the bandwidth bottleneck that exists today, OptiBand will contribute to the success of IPTV 14/04/2011 2

Concertation meeting, Trento, Italy OptiBand is focusing on: Optimizing the bandwidth of IPTV for the delivery of multiple HD streams over a single ADSL line, enabling multiple HD channels per household Preserving quality of experience video quality metrics Providing seamless integration to existing solutions and encryption schemes Leveraging the European and worldwide existing ADSL deployments 14/04/2011 3

Concertation meeting, Trento, Italy Objective #1: Providing more HD video over existing access technology and IPTV networks The main challenge to maintain HD quality of experience i.e. maintain the subjective satisfaction of the end user even though in reality the video is delivered with less bandwidth Progress summary: Definition and simulation of 3 different innovative methods of algorithms Two algorithms successfully reduced the IPTV video streams by more than 33% with minimal QoE degradation, which allow several HD streams to be transported over limited bandwidth access link Best method for implementation of the content aware data drop algorithm at the head end investigated, and architecture for supporting the algorithms developed. 14/04/20114

Concertation meeting, Trento, Italy Objective #2: Providing Scalable Personalized Quality of Experience The content aware data drop algorithm doesn’t involve any video processing in the network as well as no encryption/decryption processing The required low processing power will enable any IPTV network based on OptiBand equipment to be scalable and cost efficient for many subscribers Progress summary: The content dropping algorithm at the network side was designed to use network layer information and meta-data information provided by the IPTV eco-system to avoid excess network processing and avoid involvement in encryption scheme 14/04/20115

Concertation meeting, Trento, Italy Objective #3: Providing content aware data drop algorithm Develop content aware PDA which will be responsible for video drop decisions while maintaining minimal degradation of QoE Progress summary: 5 different methods were evaluated - concluded that 3 of the 5 potential algorithms comply with OptiBand objectives: AVC selective frame dropping: AVC encoding at head-end with priority tagging Due to poor results this option was dropped Multi AVC stream approach: AVC encoders at the head-end to generate multiple streams for every channel, streams have different bit rates to allow the packet dropping algorithm to select the optimal bit rate towards each DSL link. SVC based approach: SVC encoding with SNR scalability at the head-end. The SVC bit rate adaptation algorithm is based on multiple Operation Points The bandwidth reduced video streams are currently under evaluation of several objective and subjective QoE metrics 14/04/20116

 Optiband defined an innovative solution to address bandwidth bottlenecks at the IPTV access links ◦ Interfaces of Head-End device and Packet-Dropping device were defined to the other IPTV network elements, such as middleware, encryption devices etc. in order to ensure full interoperability with existing parts of the overall environment.  Successfully built and simulated algorithms to be deployed at the IPTV network ◦ H264/AVC based approach is targeted for existing and for short&mid term IPTV networks deployments ◦ H264/SVC based approach is targeted for long term IPTV networks deployments  Several QoE metrics were used to estimate the algorithm performance ◦ As user-based testing methods, a MOS-based quality rating was defined ◦ As automated assessment methods the SSIM and PSNR were selected 14/04/2011Concertation meeting, Trento, Italy7
