The Science Behind the Drink

Are These True Statements? Nothing re-hydrates, replenishes, or refuels better than Gatorade - not even water.

The Science Behind The Slogan

The Drink Gatorade is a popular drink that has stood up to its slogan. The origin of the drink. The science behind it.

All science, including the science behind Gatorade, starts with the Observation Question Formulation Data Collection Hypothesis Experiment Results Conclusions

Scientific Method

Slide 1 How can we prevent dehydration and fatigue in athletes? Dehydration is caused by loss of sweat during exercise. Sweat also contains electrolytes (e.g. sodium & potassium) needed by the body. Loss of carbohydrates also contributes to fatigue.

Slide 2 It has been proven that Gatorade prevents dehydration, fatigue, and cramping by replacing fluids, electrolytes, and carbohydrates lost during exercise.

Slide 3 A drink solution containing the proper amounts of electrolytes and carbohydrates will reduce dehydration and fatigue in athletes.

Slide 4 U of Florida football coaches noticed that their players were suffering from dehydration during games. Players were not “going” and their performance was poor. Players suffered from fatigue, cramping, and heat exhaustion.

Slide 5 In 1965, the first batch of Gatorade was tested on UF’s freshman football team. The players’ on-field performance was monitored and blood and urine samples were analyzed. Use and testing of Gatorade was later expanded to the entire team. Modern testing is much more advanced..

Slide 6 In the original study, players drinking a solution containing electrolytes and a 6% concentration of carbohydrates showed less dehydration, greater endurance, and fewer cramps than other athletes. Gatorade made the Florida Gators a “second half team,” and helped them win the Orange Bowl.

What’s Next? Science is a continual process based on previously completed work. Scientists continue the scientific process by challenging, confirming, improving, expanding, reapplying, or refocusing past work. Science is critical thinking. What is happening? Why? How?

…Getting Started What results would you expect? How would you interpret your results? What if you get unexpected results? How does your research apply to real life? Why is it important?

Proposal Abstract Introduction Objective Methods and materials Expected results Conclusion
