The history of Eid Al-Adha

History of Eid Al-Adha One night, Prophet Ibrahim had a dream where he saw himself slaughtering his son Ismael. Prophet Ibrahim was filled with sadness. He decided to tell his son about the dream when the boy was older. Years passed. Ismael was now a young man. Prophet Ibrahim knew what had to be done. He told his son about the dream he had many years ago where he saw himself slaughtering Ismael.

History of Eid Al-Adha Ismael, in his full trust in Allah, replied to his father saying that if Allah commanded it, then he would follow Allah’s command. So one day, when the Ismael’s mother was not aware of it, Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismael climbed up to the top of a mountain. On the way up, they saw Shaytan. He kept saying, “Why do you go up this mountain to sacrifice your son?!” In response, Ibrahim and Ismael threw stones at him until he went away.

History of Eid Al-Adha When they got to the top of the mountain, Prophet Ibrahim put his beloved son facedown on the ground so he would not have to see the blade of the knife. Prophet Ibrahim raised his knife, and brought it down towards the neck of Prophet Ismael. However, from the mercy of Allah, the moment the knife was about to cut Prophet Ismael, Allah sent an angel to tell Prophet Ibrahim that the dream had been fulfilled, and that instead of sacrificing his son, he should sacrifice a ram.

History of Eid al-adha When we go for Hajj, we throw stones at the three pillars at Jamarat. This is like a reenactment of when Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismael threw stones at Shaytan on the mountain. Also, on the Eid day, people sacrifice a lamb, goat, sheep, etc., the same way Prophet Ibrahim sacrificed a ram.

My thoughts about this story
I feel that what Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismael did was what everybody in the world thinks unimaginable. Prophet Ibrahim, as a father, great sadness, but still followed the will of Allah. Prophet Ismael even encouraged him to do so when he was informed about the dream. I feel that this is true belief in Allah and this is how strong our Iman should be. Sadly, however, this is not how things are. We should put our faith in Allah and follow him, and stay on the right path, as Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismael did.
