To what extent should the government ban the use of cell phones while driving?  The use of mobile devices while driving should be banned in all states with the exception of the use of hands free devices.  The use of hands free devices should be banned for teenage drivers under the age of 18 in all states.

Current efforts in place by the government.  In 2009, President Obama banned the use of cell phones while driving for federal workers while driving government vehicles and truck drivers who are traveling state to state. (2)  States have different laws regarding cell phone usage while driving, some have no ban. (3)  Ban of all handheld devices while driving for all ages.  Ban of all handheld devices for younger drivers.  Ban of all drivers from texting only.  Ban of all handheld devices for specific people. (I.E. school bus drivers and truck drivers.)  Etc.

Some need to use their devices while driving.  Some people work in professions where it is important to be connected to their devices.  Truckers against ban for truckers to text and drive proposed by federal government. (6)  The ban includes on board computers that receive messages from company headquarters as well as directions and order requests. Truck drivers are against this matter because of a fear of profit loss if they are required to pull over to do so.  Women feel a bit safer when talking and driving on the phone (6)  Women check in with their families to notify that they got to their destination safely.

Stats show that we don’t need technology while driving.  Drivers who text and drive are 23 times more likely to be involved in a collision. (1)  1.3 million collisions recorded for cell phone usage while driving in 2011 (1)  Teens are more likely to get involved in a collision while on the phone, whether it’s texting or talking.  Study in June-October 2009 by The Internet and American Life Project studied 800 teens ages 12 to 17 about their cell phone usage. (5)  34% of the teens in the study that were 16-17 claimed that they texted and drive at the same time. (1) Also, 26% all American teens. (5)  52% of teens that participated in the study talk while driving on phone. (1) Also, 43% of all American teens. (5)  “Distracted driving is a menace to society, and it seems to be getting worse every year.” –Ray LaHood, U.S. Department of Transportation secretary (7)

Did you know?...  Drunk driving is just as worse as texting and driving? (6)  Psychologist David Strayer from University of Utah tested who would be worse at driving in a closed course:  Sober driver off of the phone.  Legally drunk driver.  Driver on phone. (handset)  Driver on phone. (hands free) Hands free AND handset drivers reacted 18% slower to braking, more likely to hit car in front.  Should the punishment be just as worse as drunk driving? http://ehstoday.com/site-files/ehstoday.com/files/uploads/2013/07/Distracted_Driver_0.gif
