3. Transitions are words or phrases that show relationships between ideas. Transitions, sometimes called signal words, give the reader a clue about what comes next in a passage. Using transitions in your writing will make your ideas flow from one to another

4. Transition words can be used to show: location time or sequence compare and agreement contrast and opposition Clarification emphasize a point conclude or summarize. We will focus on transition words that show time or sequence.

5. first, second, third, etc. at the beginning finally prior to afterwards shortly thereafter while Subsequently soon next simultaneously at the same time then following that when later now soon during at (in)the end the first/next/last thing before last after

6. Example: In the beginning, the girls were just talking while they waited for the bus. Suddenly a car pulled up and blew its horn loudly. Next, a woman jumped out with her hair flying. At the same time, the driver put the car in park and stepped into the street. When he did this, cars began stopping. Next, the bus arrived and joined the line of stopped cars. Following that, the police arrived. Soon they had the woman calmed down. Then they asked the driver to move his car out of the way. When the street was clear, the line of cars moved on. Subsequently, the girls got on the bus. The last thing they saw was a happy dog jump into the arms of the woman.

7. Sometimes unexpected events happen in life. You are going on vacation with your family. After you read each scenario, you will have five minutes to write a one paragraph response to how you would react to each situation. Each paragraph must include a time or sequence transition word. You can’t have magical powers, or any electronic devices including cell phones. You also can’t have anything that won’t fit in your pockets.

8. You are on a small plane flying high over the Canadian Shield. You are on your way to a small fishing camp where you are meeting your family for vacation. The only other person in the plane is the pilot.

9. Suddenly the engine makes a strange screeching noise that sounds like metal grinding together. The pilot panics and parachutes out of the plane leaving you all alone. By the way, he took the ONLY parachute! What do you do now?

10. Despite everything you have done, the plane nosedives, crashing into the dense, overgrown, rocky landscape. You barely escape before, BOOM, the plane burst into flames. You, although shaken, pull yourself together and realize you are stranded in the wilderness all alone. You quickly check your pockets and find that all you have with you are five items. What do you have?

11. After sitting near the crashed plane for many hours, you slowly realize that no one is coming to rescue you and you are truly on your own. Your stomach growls like an angry Grizzly bear. Food is your first concern. What do you do? The only resources you have are the five items you found in your pockets.

12. As you are wandering in the wilderness, trying to get your bearings, you hear a noise in the bushes. You pause, hoping that it’s a rescue party coming to save you. Suddenly, out of the bushes, springs a rabid possum hissing and foaming at the mouth. What do you do?

13. The temperature is dropping. You have only the clothes you were wearing on the plane. You realize that you need shelter and fire. What do you do?

14. As you are settling down for the night you hear a growling coming from the darkness. You realize that you have nothing to defend yourself with. What do you do?

15. Your hunger drives you to search for food. You remember a berry patch which you passed as you were searching for a place to take shelter. You approach the berry patch and begin gobbling the berries like they are about to disappear.. As you are eating, something comes lumbering through the bushes towards you. It is an angry Sasquatch!! What do you do ?

16. As you are running away from the Sasquatch attack, you trip and fall off a cliff. You land on the rocky terrain below and break your leg. What do you do?

17. You hear a sound in the distance. As it nears, you realize that it is the drone of an engine. You see a small plane in the distance. What do you do?

18. Turn your responses to the survival scenario into a comic strip. Your comic strip must be colored neatly! You must have at least 10 squares. Each square must include a transition word. Each square must include a caption. Make sure you are using correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
